TOUR OF HOMES: The Poland Historical Society will have its annual Tour of Homes 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, offering the public the opportunity to see and explore some of Poland's most beautiful homes and historic buildings. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased the day of the event at the Poland Village Town Hall, 308 S. Main St., from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Presale tickets are available at Aebischer's Jewelry, 68 S. Main St. and Consign and Design, 11 W. McKinley Way. The tour includes eight locations throughout the village and township, including the iconic Old Stone Tavern and the Little Red Schoolhouse.
MAHONING AVENUE CLEANUP: Legacy Tire and Auto Repair will host the first Legacy Mahoning Avenue cleanup 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Volunteers will be asked to clean designated sections of Mahoning Avenue as part of World Cleanup Day. Volunteer check-in is at 8:30 a.m. at Legacy Tire and Auto Repair, 2408 Mahoning Ave. In case of inclement weather, the backup day is Sept. 26. The event is planned to give the community a hands-on way to help improve one of Youngstown's important business corridors.
TEA OF THE MONTH: The Girard Free Library will offer a unique tea experience 2 p.m. Thursday highlighting Gyokuro, an umami green tea from Japan, and rose, an aromatic floral, brewed using an Aeropress, a modern cylindrical brewer developed by Alan Adler. Registration is required to reserve a spot for the program by calling 330-545-2508.
NEOC BIKE RIDE: The Out-Spokin' Wheelmen will host its 53rd annual Northeast Ohio Century, or NEOC, on Sunday, bringing cyclists from Northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania together for one of the Youngstown-area club's longest-running traditions.
This year, the 25-mile route adds a little extra fall flavor with visits to the 62nd Annual Hartford Apple Festival and Hartford Hill Winery and Brewery. Riders can choose routes of 10, 25, 50 or 51 miles, making the event an option for cyclists looking for anything from a short recreational ride to a full-day endurance goal. Participants ride at their own pace along color-coded routes through mostly flat terrain.
NEOC also has earned another, perhaps more delicious, nickname: the Northeast Ohio Cookie Ride. Out-Spokin' volunteers bake dozens upon dozens of homemade cookies to keep cyclists fueled throughout the day, and lunch is included with registration.
Riders can begin between 7 and 10 a.m. at the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, 6400 state Route 46, Mecca. Helmets are required, and support vehicles will be available until 5 p.m. to assist cyclists with mechanical problems or other needs.
Registration is open at outspokinwheelmen.com. The cost is $30 per person through Thursday and $35 after that.
