9/11 remembrance events set

The following events are planned to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in Washington, D.C., New York City and Shanksville, Pa.:

Sept. 11

• AUSTINTOWN --- The Mahoning Valley 9/11 Memorial ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at the Mahoning Valley 9/11 Memorial Park,1055 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown, hosted by the Austintown Beautification Committee. There will be speakers and musical performances.

• HOWLAND – 8:30 a.m. memorial ceremony at Richard Orwig Park off East Market Street.

• VIENNA -- A memorial ceremony will take place 8:46 to 10 a.m. at the 9/11 memorial at the front of the Vienna Fire Department, 833 Youngstown Kingsville Road. There will be a program and placement of a wreath at the memorial.

• YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University will host a 9/11 Remembrance Walk that will begin at noon at Cushwa Hall, 1400 Atrium-Student Lounge, YSU campus

Sept. 12

• NILES -- The Niles Rotary Club, in partnership with Niles City Schools and Niles city, is hosting a special stair climb tribute to honor the courage, sacrifice and heroism of the first responders who answered the call on Sept. 11, 2001. The event will be at 2 p.m. at the Bo Rein Football Stadium. The goal is to climb 2,200 steps, which is the number of steps firefighters climbed to rescue people trapped inside the World Trade Center. People can participate as an individual climber or as a team. Registration is 1:30 p.m. on the day of the event. You can register as a climber at the Niles Wellness Center, National McKinley Birthplace Memorial Museum, McKinley Library or by contacting the Niles Rotary Club.
