TEA PARTY: The Holborn Herb Growers Guild's annual tea party will be 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road. Adults and children are encouraged to attend this year's festivities that will feature the sampling of herbal teas along with the samplings of both savory and sweet delicacies. Guests also can tour the summer kitchen herb gardens behind St. James Meeting Place. Guest speaker will be Jenny Wehr, owner and florist of the Willows by Wehr, who will demonstrate a tutorial floral design. As a take home keepsake of the event, souvenir tea cups and saucers will be gifted to each visitor. Basket raffles also will be offered.
The Holborn Herb Growers Guild began in 1982 with the aim of educating members and the public in the use and enjoyment of herbs. To this end, the guild has established public herb gardens at the Western Reserve Village at the Canfield Fairgrounds and the Summer Kitchen Gardens at Boardman Park and has hosted numerous educational programs and events including scholarship awards.

FAIR LIVESTOCK PROJECT: The 17th annual Canfield Junior Fair livestock project will take place inside the Canfield Fair Event Center. Any company or organization may purchase livestock at the auction that can be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley for distribution to hungry families in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. People can bid online by downloading the Canfield Fair app "Canfield Fairgrounds" from their app store. Livestock purchased to be donated to the food bank will be processed by Winona Frozen Foods and Lehman Poultry.
SCHOOL TO OPEN: The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Akiva Academy broke ground on a new middle school (fifth through eighth grades) in 2025. The $1.9 million expansion includes four classrooms, office spaces and a multipurpose area designed for Shabbat services. Classes begin in the new building Sept. 8. The ribbon will be cut on the new Altshuler Akiva Academy, Goldstone-Mirkin Family Middle School at the Suzi Solomon Campus at 10 a.m. today at 520 Gypsy Lane.
HONORING DOLLY: The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley will honor the life and legacy of Dolly Parton and her commitment to literacy with a communitywide celebration of reading and creativity Tuesday.
Parton made it her mission to inspire children to read through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a book-gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin kindergarten, regardless of family income. Children enrolled in the program receive a free book each month, mailed to their home in their name.
The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley launched the Dolly Parton Imagination Library locally in 2014, recognizing that reading regularly with children during the preschool years gives them a strong foundation for success in school and beyond. United Way continues to champion the program with the financial support and cooperation of area educators, families and community partners.
As part of the Tuesday celebration, all PLYMC locations and the United Way Volunteer Resource Center will offer free books for children while supplies last. Distribution is limited to one book per child, with a maximum of three books per household.
