Rotary recognizes Canfield students

A recent Canfield Rotary luncheon saw the resumption of a popular club program that recognizes the accomplishments of students in the Canfield Local School District.

Superintendent Joe Knoll also presented a program highlighting some of the accomplishments of the Canfield School District.

The Canfield Local Schools “Students of the Month” awards for October were presented by the principals from the student’s school. The students also received a yard sign to spotlight their recognition.

The student of the month program was initiated by the Rotary Club of Canfield in October 2021. Students are selected based on academic standing, significant effort, community involvement, extracurricular activities, leadership and service to others.

The Hilltop Elementary School student of the month is Sadie Zavadil who was selected because she is a leader in all areas of the classroom.

Mike Flood, Hilltop principal, said she is mature in her decision making and sets good examples for all students. She is kind and helpful towards other students and staff members.

She sets goals and doesn’t give up until she achieves those goals. Her favorite subject is math, because of the challenge.

She hopes to become a 6th grade teacher or a dancer.

Principal Judd Rubin reported that Canfield Village Middle School student of the month is Peyton McCune. Principal Rubin stated that Peyton is one of the nicest young men to come through the middle school.

He is always willing to lend a hand. Peyton is extremely well liked by both his peers and the staff members.

History is his favorite subject, and he enjoys golfing and family trips to Hilton Head.

He hopes to play golf in college, although he is unsure of what he wants to study.

Principal Travis Lavery shared with Rotarians that Leightyn Nelson is the C.H. Campbell student of the month. Mr. Lavery stated that Leightyn constantly demonstrates maturity, kindness and resilience in and out of the classroom.

She advocates for herself in a respectful and confident way, showing responsibility for her own learning and personal growth. Her ability to rise above unkind behavior while maintaining a positive outlook sets a powerful example for peers.

Leightyn is a bright and hardworking student.

Her favorite subject is math, and she hopes to become a nurse so she can help others.

Principal Dr. Mark Potts said Canfield High School is honored to announce Olivia Weber as student of the month.

Dr. Potts stated that Olivia is a senior with a high GPA and tremendous test scores. She is a four-year member of Y-Teens, Young Leaders, Key Club, Student Council and Canfield Players Drama.

She is involved in music and is currently a member of the One Octave Higher choral group. Olivia is a member of the National Honor Society and was recently selected to the Homecoming Court.

Olivia is also involved in scouting and was awarded her Eagle Scout on Oct. 16. She hopes to major in psychology and become an occupational therapist.
