COMMUNITY NEWS: Pet blessings set Sunday at St. Columba

PET BLESSING: St. Columba Cathedral in downtown Youngstown will host its annual Blessing of the Pets in honor of the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, who is the patron saint of pets, at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on the front steps of the church on West Wood Street. All dogs must be on leashes, and other pets, including cats, ferrets, reptiles and birds, must be in a cage.

BOARDMAN FIRE OPEN HOUSE: The Boardman Fire Department will host its annual open house 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its Market Street fire station across from the Southern Park Mall. There will be fire trucks on display, fire safety demonstrations, a meet and greet with firefighters, kids’ activities, station tours, a flu shot clinic, dental van and mobile library. The open house is in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, which starts Sunday.

YOUNGSTOWN FIRE DEPARTMENT EVENT: The Youngstown Fire Department will host an open house at its downtown station, 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., noon to 3 p.m. Sunday to kick off Fire Prevention Week, which runs through Oct. 11. There will be activities and demonstrations for all ages, fire safety tips, fire prevention tips, a bounce house, a selfie photo station, touch a truck, a fire extinguisher simulator, an auto extrication demonstration and refreshments.

CONCERT SET: St Patrick Church,. 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown, will host a free concert with David Timlin and Jenna Barvitsky on dueling violins at 1:15 p.m. Sunday. A free will offering will be taken.

READ TO K9 FRIENDS: The Girard Free Library will host K9s for Compassion where children up to age 12 can read to a trained therapy dog friend at 6 p.m. Monday. Registration is required at the library.

HELPING THE PARK: The Help Save the Mill Creek Park Deer and Wildlife will have an autumn basket raffle, bake sale and 50-50 from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the West Side Bowl, 2617 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, The event is free to the public, but donations will be accepted to help with expenses of saving the wildlife at the park.

BIRTHDAY BIKE RIDE: The 22nd Garrett Wonders Birthday Bike Ride will take place 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, beginning and ending at the Trumbull County Veterans Services Commission Building, 253 E. Market St., Warren. Participants can enjoy rides of 20, 30, 40 or 50 miles on the Garrett Wonders Bike Trail, the Trumbull County Greenway and adjoining roads.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag. Refreshments and cookie stops are provided along the routes.

There will be raffles and door prizes throughout the day. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the starting building; winners do not need to be present.

Proceeds go to the Garrett Wonders Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships to students at Warren G. Harding High School and The Ohio State University. HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROGRAM: The Springfield Township Historical Society, 14188 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, will host an Afternoon at the Museum program at 2 p.m. Sunday. Barbara Herriott will discuss the history of coal mining in Springfield Township, including the East Fairfield Coal Co. The program is free to the public.

SUPPORT GROUP MEETS: The Youngstown Area Scleroderma Support Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Davidson’s Restaurant, 3636 Canfield Road, and by Zoom. The meeting is open to the public and focuses on issues of people affected in all ways by scleroderma. This includes patients, family, friends, or anyone interested in advancing the areas of support, education and research.

ONEOHIO TO MEET: The OneOhio Region 7 Collaborative of the OneOhio Foundation will meet 5 p.m. Monday at Direction Home of Eastern Ohio, 1030 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.

OSTOMY MEETING: The Youngstown area Ostomy Support Group meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Woodland Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, 8401 Market St., Boardman.

Family members and people considering an ostomy are also welcome. The group offers education, encouragement and support to anyone whose life is affected by an ostomy.
