OLDER ADULTS DAY OUT: The fourth annual Older Adults Day Out free senior health and wellness fair will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., Youngstown. There will be vendors, free lunch, entertainment and chances to win prizes

ALUMNI REUNION: The East High School Alumni Association is sponsoring the All City Alumni Reunion Dinner / Dance 7 to 11 p.m. Aug. 8 at McGuffey Center, 1649 Jacobs Road, Youngstown. Featured will be music, a 50/50 raffle, silent auction and dinner. Cost is $35 per person.

AFTERNOON AT THE MUSEUM: Springfield Township Historical Society continues its “Afternoon at the Museum” program on Sunday, with Steve Chaszeyka presenting “Airbrushing and Pinstriping Art.” Chaszeyka will discuss his special art techniques and display his nationally recognized art.

FIRST LOOK: The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Akiva Academy will offer a “first look” of the new Altshuler Akiva Academy, Goldstone-Mirkin Family Middle School at the Suzi Solomon Campus in Youngstown.

The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Akiva Academy broke ground on a new middle school (fifth through eighth grades) earlier this year. The $1.5 million expansion includes four classrooms, office spaces and a multipurpose area designed for Shabbat services. In the next five years, this project will allow Akiva Academy to double its current enrollment.

Members of the public are invited to tour the new school 5 to 6 p.m. today at 520 Gypsy Lane, which is the old Allen’s Pharmacy. Guests are asked to park in the lot between the Jewish Community Center and Heritage Manor or the Jewish Community Center main parking lot.

FIREMEN’S FESTIVAL: The Green Township Fire Department Association will host its 80th annual Firemen’s Festival at 4:30 p.m. Saturday behind the Greenford Fire Station, 12210 Lisbon Road. The traditional half-chicken dinner with all the fixings will be available for eat-in or carryout at $14 each. There will be live music by the Throw Together Band and a basket raffle. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m., music starts at 5:30 p.m., and the raffle drawing begins at 8:30 p.m.

ST. PATRICK FESTIVAL: The 67th annual St. Patrick Parish Festival will take place Thursday to Sunday at the church grounds, 225 N. Main St. Hubbard. RALLY PLANNED: Members of Help Save the Mill Creek Park Deer group and other citizens will hold a rally at 4 p.m. Friday at 48 McKinley Ave., Youngstown, across the street from Fellows Riverside Gardens. The rally and peaceful protest are aimed at reminding the public about mismanagement of the park’s wildlife.

SAFETY DAY: Beaver Township will host a kids fun and safety day 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Woodworth Park. There will be educational safety information, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, food and safety forces vehicles.

MCDONALD SAFETY DAY: The village fire and police departments will host a safety day for local children 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Woodland Park. There will be various safety vehicles displayed and a police dog demonstration.

FUNDRAISER: The Emmanuel Community Care Center, North State Street, Girard, will host a breakfast fundraiser and basket raffle 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for the raffle are $10 each and the winners do not need to be present. The center is also planning its school supply giveaway Aug. 12 for children in grades K-12. ITALIAN FESTIVAL: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Youngstown will host its 25th annual Italian Festival from Thursday to Sunday at the church grounds, 343 Via Mount Carmel Way. INSPIRING MINDS MARKETS: This summer, more than 300 students in the Mahoning Valley participated in Inspiring Minds’ six-week summer enrichment program. Both the Warren and Youngstown chapters of Inspiring Minds will culminate their programs with the annual youth-led summer markets 11a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at 837 Woodland St. NE, Warren, and noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at 2110 South Ave., Youngstown. The summer markets will highlight what IM students learned about entrepreneurship by showcasing 30+ “businesses” they created throughout the summer program. In attendance at the event will be parents, family members, community supporters and committed partners.

FOOD FEST: OCCHA, a nonprofit organization supporting the area’s Hispanic community, will host its 13th annual international Latino food festival noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at 3660 Shirley Road, Youngstown. CHRISTMAS IN JULY: Cafe Rose, 4491 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, is hosting its annual Christmas In July market noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The market will feature local artisans, crafters and bakers offering unique, handcrafted goods and festive finds. Beyond the festive shopping experience, the market will support local seniors with a basket raffle and personal care item collection.

All proceeds and items collected will directly benefit the Senior Support Action Group, a local organization dedicated to providing vital services and support to seniors in the community. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the market. Shoppers also will have the opportunity to secure five raffle tickets by donating essential personal care items for homebound seniors.

Shoppers are encouraged to bring new, unopened items such as soap, shampoo, adult incontinence pads, toothpaste, lotion and other toiletries to the market.

COMMUNITY SHRED EVENT: Byzantine Center at the Grove Banquet Center will host a Protect ‘n Shred on-site mobile document shredding event 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at 3801 Shady Run Road, Youngstown.

Although the event is free, there is a limit of 4 to 5 standard boxes with materials for shredding.

The sessions are designed for individuals interested in fall career training programs, financial aid and the enrollment process. The sessions are free. Participants will learn how to apply, tour the MCCTC Adult Career Center and meet with staff who can guide them through program selection and financial aid options. GATHERING SET: The Youngstown community is invited to gather for Candles For Democracy, a candlelight vigil dedicated to honoring the spirit of democracy, unity and the enduring power of the people. The event will take place 7 p.m. Saturday at the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market St., Youngstown. The vigil is an opportunity for community members to stand shoulder to shoulder — lighting candles, raising voices and reclaiming the core values of justice, independence and representation. The event is free to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring their own candles, though a limited number may be available.

PRAYER VIGIL: The United Pastors, Clergy and Community Leaders Against the Violence will have a kickoff Stop the Violence community prayer vigil and rally 1 p.m. on Saturday The event will take place in the Hillman St. parking lot of New Bethel Baptist Church, 1524 Hillman St., Youngstown. Gathering time will be at 12:30 p.m. Pastors and clergy from various churches in the community will be present to pray for this year’s Stop the Violence Campaign as well as praying for peace in the city streets. SCULPTURE CELEBRATION: A bike drive will be held to help community members in need from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Westside Bowl. The event will also celebrate the completion of a statue done by sculptor Tony Avenue who installed three circular bike racks which are the last section of a large art piece on the front lawn of Westside Bowl. The sculpture is over 100 feet long in total. Information on the Thrive Mahoning Valley volunteer bike repair program will be available and other community organizations will be present. Those attending are asked to bring a new or gently used adult bike to donate to local adults in need of reliable transportation.

BARBER OPEN HOUSE: A barber open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 815 Youngstown Warren Road, Niles. The event will bring together local barber shops, aspiring barbers, and community members for a day of networking, and showcasing local talent.

MOSS HOUSE: The Moss Ancestral Home and Mineral Ridge Historical Society will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at 1499 and 1476 Burnett St. in Mineral Ridge. The Moss Ancestral Home was built in the early 1800’s and is a Pennsylvania Bank style home. Across the street is the historical society full of artifacts and pictures from Mineral Ridge and surrounding areas.

Cin City and the Saints will play 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday; Blue Collar Band, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday; Ovation, 8 to 11 p.m. Sunday; Common Ground, 8 to 11 p.m. Monday; and Dead Flowers, 8 to 11 p.m. Tuesday. The parade is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, followed by Mass at St. Rose Church at 11 a.m. The Girard Community Band will play 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and the Blue Coat Band will play 8 to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by fireworks at 11 p.m.

There will be carnival games, bounce houses, concessions and more.

GATHERING PLACE: The Gathering Place will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield. Mike Muder, manager of Goodwill’s Youngstown Radio Reading Services, will discuss the history of and mission of radio reading and services available to people who are blind and print-impaired. A box lunch will be provided.

ENVIRONMENTAL TALKS: After a launch in Lake and Cuyahoga counties, the Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition continues its groundbreaking Reimagining Community Conversations series — a first-of-its-kind regional effort federally funded by the NOAA Climate Resilience Regional Challenge Grant.

Conversations reflect the growing environmental challenges impacting communities across northeast Ohio. Upcoming events include 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Newport Library on Market Street in Youngstown and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Raymond John Wean Foundation in downtown Warren.

MEDITATION PROGRAM: A new weekly class, “Meditation: The Key to the Kingdom,” will be offered at 6 p.m. Mondays at Unity Spiritual Centre, 122 Naylor Lloyd Road, Liberty. The class will include 30 minutes of meditation and a 30-minute discussion. The class is free, but love offerings will be accepted. Call 330-539-0122 for information.

SUMMER FESTIVAL: St. Nicholas Greek Summerfest will take place Thursday through Sunday at the church grounds, 220 N. Walnut St., Youngstown, across from Choffin Career Center. This is the 41st year for the festival. There will be music, food, games and dancing. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

SHEET & TUBE DAY: Youngstown Sheet & Tube Day will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mahoning Valley Railroad Heritage Association, 1340 Poland Ave. Youngstown. There will be presentations on the hot metal bottle cars and efforts to move them to a museum. There will be steel mill items on display. Anyone with an interest in local steel mills and former employees is welcome.

APPLICANTS SOUGHT: The Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley is seeking applications for its ninth annual Autism Teacher Mini Grant Program. Awards will be given in three denominations — $500, $250 and $100 — to applicants from public and private schools in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties. Online applications are being accepted at the ASMV website through Aug. 1. Underwritten by the Goulish-Kosco Insurance Agency, ASMV hosts this annual program to show appreciation and support for the outstanding teachers in the Valley who support children on the autism spectrum and those with other special needs. The ASMV Board, a group consisting of community members and parents, will review the applications and select the winners in mid-August.

GIRARD LIBRARY EVENTS: Various events are planned this week at Girard Free Library, 105 E. Prospect St. Teens can decorate book covers using gems and other items provided to them at 3 p.m. today. Glow in the Dark slime will take place at 2 p.m. Friday. Children can make slime and use glow in the dark paint. Wanda Thomas will discuss how to attract helpful insects such as lady bugs and bees to the garden to help them thrive at 6 p.m. Wednesday. To register for any program, call 330-545-2508.

LIBRARY CRAFTS: Lepper Library in Lisbon will host its July adult craft class 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday. The craft will be an air plant holder created with wire and attached to a decorated wooden block. Children’s Events for July: Summer Reading Weekly Programs, 11 a.m. Mondays. Carrie from Columbiana Public Library will be a guest on Monday; Paint Your World with Stories will be July 14. The topic is Color Fusion: Books and Color Combine with Amber from the Lepper Library.

DIRECTORS LUNCHEON: Members of the Columbiana Women’s Club are invited to join the Board of Directors for lunch, conversation and CWC updates at noon Monday.

LEBANESE FUN FEST: St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown, will host its Lebanese Fun Fest 4 to 11 p.m. July 12 and noon to 8 p.m. July 13. There will be traditional Lebanese food available for dine-in, carryout or drive-thru, as well as a full premium bar and live music. The Vegas Band will perform 6 to 10 p.m. July 12 and RDNA will perform 3 to 7 p.m. July 13. There also will be bounce houses, carnival games and face painting for children.

Parking and admission are free.

FLAG REMOVAL: The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission will remove flags from the graves at Calvary Cemetery, 248 S.Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown, starting at 9 a.m. July 12. Anyone who would like to volunteer time and also take flags home that were placed on veterans’ graves is welcome.
