COALITION HOSTS EVENT: The Greater Youngstown Community Mobilization Coalition will host a Legislative and Policy Virtual Forum at 6:30 p.m. today. The event will include a review of important laws that are being discussed in Ohio regarding changes to voting laws, public education and health care. The forum will be live streamed via Facebook, but if you wish to ask any questions of the presenters or legislators, or receive the information, you must be signed into the Zoom room. SCOUTS TO BE CELEBRATED: The public is invited to the Stambaugh District Great Trail Council Scouting America 20th annual “Celebration of Scouting” breakfast fundraiser June 10 at the Lake Club in Poland. The event aims to recognize the organization’s impact on Scouts’ lives and the community. For information, call Todd Davis at 864-266-9932.
SUMMER CAMPS: The Mahoning County Career & Technical Center will offer summer camps 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 9 to 18. There are 12 hands-on camps. Programs include robotics, engineering, culinary arts, public safety and auto technician. For information and to register, visit www.mahoningctc.com. There will be two weeks of camps for students in grades sixth to eighth from June 9 to 11 and June 16 to 18. Cost is $40 per student per week.
BAKING CONTEST: The Simply Slavic baking contest will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at the SMARTS Center in the Ohio One building, 25 E. Boardman St., Youngstown. The contest allows amateur bakers to showcase their skills and test traditional Slavic recipes. The event is being held one week before the Simply Slavic Festival June 13 and 14 at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.
Interested participants should submit their entry form, a $5 nonrefundable entry fee and a 75-word description of their baked item. The entry form is available online at www.simplyslavic.org. Be sure to highlight key details about the dish’s Slavic roots, the holiday or family tradition it’s associated with, and where you first enjoyed it. Entries should be dropped off today at Krakus Polish Deli & Bakery on Market Street.
Contestants must preregister and bring two of their baked items (or two dozen cookies) packaged separately. All entries must be presented to the judges at room temperature.
FAMILY FUN WALK: The 22nd annual Scleroderma Family Fun Walk will be 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Boardman Park. The event will include children’s games, raffle, basket auction, food trucks, Boardman fire trucks, face painting, clowns and music. HELPING HANDS: The Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church 4580 Canfield Road, will have gently used and new clothes for families 9 to 11 a.m. each Tuesday.
GUEST SPEAKER: Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 North Broad St. in Canfield, will host a Gathering Place event at 11 a.m. June 9 with guest speaker Roxann Seabest, vice president of United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, who will speak on “Enriching Your Life by Volunteering.” A box lunch will be provided. The program is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens.
