STREETSCAPE PLANTING DAY: Youngstown CityScape will host the annual Streetscape Planting Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Youngstown. The event provides an opportunity for community members to be part of the community development. In case of inclement weather the event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday. Volunteers are asked to register at YoungstownCityscape.org, Last year 1,000 people helped support Youngstown by landscaping public greenspace in the downtown and neighborhoods in each city ward.
SOCIETY SERIES: Springfield Township Historical Society will host an “Afternoon at the Museum” program 2 p.m. Sunday with Ari Lester presenting “Settling of the Ohio Valley: Native Americans and early immigrants.” The program is free to the public, The museum is located at 14188 Youngstown Pittsburgh Road in Petersburg
STEM PROGRAMS: Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host a summer camp from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 9 to 11 for Week 1. There are 12 different hands-on camps including robotics, engineering, culinary arts, diesel power tech, future health professionals and others. It costs $40 with limited spots available. GREETING CARD CLASS: Girard Multigenerational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave. Girard, will host a greeting card class 1 to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday. Seating is limited.
NURSE SCHOLARSHIP: The Youngstown Area Jewish Foundation is accepting applications for its Mildred Engel Nurse Scholarship.
The scholarship provides financial assistance to individuals working toward an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing. Recipients must reside within a 60-mile radius of the Youngstown area. The scholarship award may cover tuition and transportation costs up to $10,000 annually. Visit

Recipients must commit to working at least three shifts a month as an STNA, LPN, or RN (associate) at Heritage Manor Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation while pursuing their degree or elect to work for Heritage Manor after receiving their RN license. Those without the necessary credentials are still eligible to apply. Heritage Manor will support their STNA training. Interested individuals must be accepted into an accredited RN nursing program.

SUVCW CEREMONY: Camp Isaac Eaton Number 504 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War of Mercer, Pa., will conduct a ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday to honor Edwin Ayers, the last Union veteran of the Civil War to be buried in Lawrence County at Pulaski Cemetery in Pulaski, Pa.
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a 501c3 non-profit, fraternal, patriotic and educational organization, instituted to carry on the work of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), which was the largest Union Civil War veterans’ organization. Prior to disbanding and before the death of its last member, the GAR officially designated the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War as its successor and heir to its remaining property. The SUVCW is officially recognized as the GAR’s legal successor, receiving its Congressional Charter in 1954 (Public Law 605).
COFFEE AND ART: Starting Sunday, Grizzly Bean Coffee Shop, 4520 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, in partnership with Gateways to Better Living, is featuring original artwork on their coffee sleeves by individuals with developmental disabilities.
Every coffee purchased at Grizzly Bean will come wrapped in a one-of-a-kind sleeve designed by a local artist served by Gateways to Better Living. These unique sleeves will be distributed with drinks while supplies last.

DECORATING GRAVES: The Flying Flags for Heroes ceremony, held in conjunction with the annual graves decoration will be held 9 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery in Poland. The public is invited to attend and participate. Anyone wishing to assist can meet at the first driveway behind the chapel no later than 8:55 a.m.
MUSIC GUILD FESTIVAL: The New Music Guild will host their 39th festival featuring guest artists Brendan and Karen Considine, and Dr. Konrad Bienienda, at 3 p.m. Sunday in the basement social hall at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown. Refreshments will be served.
ABWA MEETING: The June 10 meeting of the Mill Creek Chapter American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) will meet at 6 p.m. June 10 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield, with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

DAY TO CELEBRATE: Lowellville Day will be 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday on Water Street in the downtown to celebrate community spirit. Festivities will kick off at noon with a parade followed by activities, including a decorated golf cart contest, musical performances, duck race and basket raffle. Community members are invited to paint the temporary bike lane design 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today on Belmont Avenue between Tod Lane to Gypsy Lane. The airport bike ride begins at noon Sunday, and the community bike ride at 2 p.m. Registered riders for the event will receive a free lunch.

OPEN HOUSE IN MINERAL RIDGE: The Moss Ancestral Home and Mineral Ridge Historical Society will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, at 1499 and 1476 Burnett St. in Mineral Ridge. The Moss Ancestral Home is a Pennsylvania Bank Style house and was built in the 1830s. The society is across the street and is filled with area artifacts and pictures. They are both open the second Sunday of every month from now until November.
GUEST SPEAKER: Zack Felger, district outreach and education specialist at the Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation District, will be the guest speaker at 11 a.m. Monday at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield. Felger will speak on “Planting With a Purpose: Integrating Native Plants in Your Landscape to Benefit Wildlife.” A box lunch will be provided. FISHING DERBY: A fishing derby for children of all ages will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hubbard Conservation Club, 1760 Wick Campbell Road.
COMMUNITY GROW DAY: Bronson Family Farm, located on Lansdowne Boulevard in Youngstown, invites the community to participate in Community Grow Day on Saturday. The daylong event is designed to engage residents in sustainable agriculture, celebrate food justice and strengthen community connections through volunteering and education. Community Grow Day is designed to empower individuals and families to take an active role in cultivating fresh food, support green initiatives and improve community health outcomes.
A Ground Blessing Ceremony will take place 5:30 to 7 a.m., with a Sustainable Fencing Project beginning 7 a.m. and Seed and Plant Distribution at 7:30 a.m.
Free seeds and starter plants will be distributed, with guidance from local growers on how to start a home garden.
Gardening and Sustainability Demonstrations will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon, followed by a community lunch and cooking demonstration at 12:30 p.m. Family and youth activities also will take place throughout the day.
The event is free and open to all ages. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes, bring work gloves, and come ready to collaborate. Registration is required.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS: The American Association of University Women Warren-Trumbull County Branch will hold a human trafficking awareness day from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2860 E. Market St., Warren. The event is open to the public. There will be a panel discussion and resource fair on the facts and myths of human trafficking, prevalence in Trumbull County and how to advocate for victims and survivors and the resources available.
The resource fair starts at 5 p.m., followed by a reception with refreshments.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS: The 14th annual Special Olympics Trumbull County Invitational will take place Saturday at Girard’s Arrowhead Stadium, 200 S. Highland Ave SE. This year, 150 athletes from five programs across four counties will participate in the event. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a day filled with various track and field competitions.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual or physical disabilities — giving them ongoing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and share their gifts, skills, and friendships with their families, fellow athletes, and the community.
The event is free and open to the public.
SETON III TO MEET: Seton III, a Catholic service organization for women, will host its end of the year dinner today at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. Installation of officers for the 2025-26 program year will take place. Hostesses are Janet Erdel, Catherine Fleming and Dorothy Kiralyvv.
BOARDMAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROGRAM: During World War II, 1,074 American women flew for the U.S. Army Air Forces as members of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots. These women faced discrimination and danger. Thirty-eight WASPs were killed in the line of duty and four of these pilots were from the Youngstown area.
Marilyn Mong belonged to the Lake Erie Chapter of the women pilots association, “The 99’s.” At one of those meetings, she met a WASP who told Mong about towing targets for the artillery unit to practice shooting with live rounds.
Mong will speak at 10 a.m. Saturday at the society’s meeting at the St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park. The public is invited.
Mong is a past member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, the Balloon Federation of America, and the 99’s. Mong and her husband Jerry are World War II reenactors.
RUMMAGE SALE: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown, will host its annual Spring Rummage Sale 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Moab House is a nonprofit Christian organization that gives support to former foster care young adults ages 18 to 21. The Moab House provides safe and loving transitional housing, as well as financial and social skills. FLOWER SALE: The Grand Valley Ruritan Organization is hosting the Ruritan Flower Sale every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in May starting Friday at the northwest corner of Route 322 and Route 45 in Orwell. The times are 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a basket raffle, arts and crafts, vendors and a children’s zone.
