Community news: Donations sought for cemetery wreaths
VETERANS GRAVES: Jackson Township Citizens Association, a nonprofit organization, is seeking donations to help place 400 wreaths on veterans’ graves in Jackson Township Cemetery. Wreaths will be placed at 1 p.m. Dec. 7. A donation of $10 will purchase one wreath. Checks can be made out to Jackson Township Citizens Association and be mailed to P.O. Box 422, North Jackson, 44451.
CHRISTMAS IN VILLAGE: McDonald Village will host Christmas in the Village 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the fire department and Woodland Park. The tree lighting will be done by John Muckridge Jr. There will be a visit from Santa Claus, crafts, holiday hayrides and refreshments.
CONCERT SET: St Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown, will have Jessica Banks, flautist, perform a concert 1:15 to 2 p.m. Sunday A free-will offering will be taken.
GIRARD EVENT: The city of Girard and the Helping Hands of Girard organization will host Light Up Girard on Saturday. Businesses in Girard are being asked to decorate and light up the city for the holiday season. After Saturday, community members can scan a QR code available on posters throughout the town to vote for their favorite display.
The weekend is to kick off Small Business Saturday.
Girard’s first Christmas in the Park will take place Dec. 21 at Tod Park. Each business is being asked to decorate an ornament that represents their business for the community Christmas tree. The decorations can be dropped off at Girard City Hall or Girard Free Library.
NONPROFIT OF YEAR: Yellow Brick Place Cancer Wellness Center was presented the first Nonprofit of the Year Award during the Western Reserve Transit Authority’s annual holiday lights campaign kickoff. Yellow Brick Place was one of 12 nonprofits being honored at the fourth annual WRTA campaign. The center offers support and education to cancer patients by offering individual and group programs in the Mahoning Valley. Other 2024 nonprofit honorees are Clover Recycling, Dylan’s House, Olivia’s Grace, Sight for all United, Friends of Fido, United Returning Citizens, Limitless Dance Company, Mahoning County Public Special Olympics, Veterans Haven, DIVA Donations and the Youngstown Lions Club.
