COMMUNITY NEWS: High holiday food drive for Second Harvest begins

HIGH HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE: The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is holding its annual High Holiday food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley through Oct. 31. Donations are being accepted at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown and Akiva Academy, 505 Gypsy Lane; Temple El Emeth and Children of Israel Congregation, 3970 Logan Way; and Ohev Beth Sholom, 1119 Elm St. Items needed the most year-round include peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables, canned fruit, tuna fish, dry pasta, canned soup, and macaroni and cheese. Monetary donations should be made payable to the Second Harvest Food Bank and sent to JCRC, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, OH 44504.

SOCIETY SETS OPEN HOUSE: The Poland Historical Society will host an open house 1 to 3 p;m. Sunday at the Little Red Schoolhouse at 4515 Center Road. Visitors may tour the schoolhouse, learn about Poland history and receive refreshments. There will be pumpkins for children to decorate.

OKTOBERFEST: The village of McDonald will host an Oktoberfest 10 a.m to 11 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Park. There will be food vendors, activities for children, bounce houses, and arts and crafts. A craft market will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ramsay Pavilion. Musical entertainment will be at 4 p.m. and karaoke will be from 10 to 11 p.m. There will be a pickleball tournament and pepper and onions contest. Visit VillageOktoberfest@gmail.com.

BOOK SALE: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman, will host a used book sale 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday to Friday. From 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, books for $1 a bag will be featured. All proceeds from the sale support local, national and international mission outreach projects.

COMEDY EVENT: The Altar and Rosary Society of St Patrick Church in Hubbard wil host a comedy fundraiser Saturday at the parish hall. There will be comedy, food and fellowship. Tickets are $30 and include food, appetizers and the show. There will be a 50-50 raffle.

CRAFTS AND SWEETS: Cafe Rose, 4491 Mahoning Ave. Ausitntown, will host a Halloween crafts and sweets market noon to 4 p.m. Sunday with a pet costume contest, local vendors, makers and bakers and ghoulish treats. Each participating small business vendor is asked to donate a homemade item for the raffle. Proceeds will support Furrever and After Cat Sanctuary.

FALL CLEANUP: Fall cleanup at the Girard City Cemetery will continue through Sunday for cleaning off graves. After Sunday, employees will remove any decorations on graves in preparation for holiday wreaths.

BAGS FOR LEAVES: The city of Girard will require use of paper lawn bags for the seasonal leaf collection. Leaves raked to the street will not be picked up. The city has purchased a bulk quantity of bags with the first five free and others five for $1 at the street department garage, 943 S. State St. Collection of bags will be with trash collection. Bags can be picked up 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

SWAP A PALOOZA: The Neighborhood will host a Swap a Palooza noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Penguin City Brewery in downtown Youngstown. The event aims to promote the sustainability of extending the life of clothing and reducing waste in Northeast Ohio. The event is free. Clothing can be dropped off noon to 5 p.m. All leftover clothing will be donated to the Warren Family Mission.

SPOOKY EVENTS: The Friends of the Girard Free Library will hold a spooktacular evening of Halloween at 6 p.m. Thursday in the library community room. Guests can listen to scary tales and enjoy Halloween-themed snacks.
