COMMUNITY NEWS: Many local drumlines to perform at Boardman stadium
BOARDMAN DRUM NIGHT: The Boardman Band Drum Night will be 7 p.m. today at Spartan Stadium. Drumlines from Austintown, Howland, Hubbard, Liberty, Mathews, Poland, Pymatuning Valley, Springfield and Boardman will perform and then play with all bands together. Admission is $2 per person with senior citizens admitted free. In case of inclement weather, the event will be inside the high school gymnasium.
TROPICAL BATS: McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host a Zoom program on tropical bats at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The program will be presented by Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute affiliated scientists.
CHAPTER TO MEET: The Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Church Ministry Building , 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman. Roslyn Torella will present a program on “Researching Italian Civil Records.” Torella specializes in immigration and Italian genealogy. The event is free.
CLASS REUNION: The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Davidson’s Restaurant in Cornersburg, All classmates are welcome. Call Larry at 330-503-6663.
BAVARIAN FEST: The sixth annual Bavarian Oktoberfest will be 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at St. Nicholas Parish Hall, 764 Fifth St., Struthers. There will be traditional German foods, games of chance, a 50-50 raffle and entertainment by the Youngstown Saxon Brass Band.
BAND ALUMNI: The Girard High School Band will be joined by alumni band members for the halftime show Friday at Arrowhead Stadium. Those alumni wanting to take part are asked to register at 330-545-5431 ext 2.
PLANT SWAP: Girard Free Library will host a plant swap noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Those attending can bring a healthy pest-free plant or cutting to swap. People can share gardening information and take home something new..
POLISH ARTS CLUB: The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown will sponsor a free presentation on the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the first-floor event center at the main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County on Wick Avenue.
Thomas Welsh, author of “The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown: Serving the Mahoning Valley since 1874,” will be the speaker and will be available to sign copies of the book. Hollywood actor Ed O’Neill, a 1964 graduate of Ursuline High School, wrote the book’s foreword.
The Polish Arts Club, the oldest continuously operating Polish American organization in Youngstown, was organized in 1935 by area educator Florence Turowski.
