Community news: Lecture on Valley mob set
MOB PROGRAM: Author Vince Guerreri will speak on the mob in the Mahoning Valley on Saturday at the National McKinley Birthplace Museum in Niles. He will speak on the decline and fall of the mob in the Mahoning Valley. Reservations can be made by calling the museum at 330-652-4273.
HUNGER MONTH COLLECTION: Armstrong, 9328 Woodworth Road, North Lima, is holding its seventh annual “Avenge Hunger Month” though Oct. 6. to help food pantries in local communities. The event helps support food banks and soup kitchens. Nonperishable food items and monetary donations may be brought to Armstrong during September. Other collection sites are Sparkle Market grocery outlets in Boardman and the YMCA on McClurg Road in Boardman.
BOOK SALE: The Friends of the Girard Free Library will host a book sale 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. There will also be a bake sale in the library lobby. Proceeds from the event will help the Friends replace the carpeting in the children’s reading room. The event will be cash-sale only.
AFTERNOON AT THE MUSEUM: Springfield Township Historical Society’s sixth annual Afternoon at the Museum is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday with Ron Stacy, curator of the Harness Racing Museum in Canfield. He will discuss the history of harness racing. The museum, located at 14188 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road., is open at 2 p.m. for the free program. HELP FAMILY: A Go Fund Me page has been set up at the Niles City Schools social media site to help Jerry and Christine Walters of Mineral Ridge, who lost their home in a recent fire. The Walters lost their home and all their belongings in a house fire Aug. 21. Christine has been a teacher with the Niles City Schools for more than 30 years. Jerry is employed at Clark Dietrich in Warren.
FARMERS MARKET: The Hubbard Farmers Market, featuring local farmers, makers and bakers, is scheduled from 10 a.m. t o 2 pm. Sundays through September at Tylee Park near the fire department.
PAINTING CLASS: Girard Free Library will host a program on painting a mountain scene at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9. Call the library at 330-545-2508 to reserve a spot.
