COMMUNITY NEWS: 32nd Brier Hill Fest nears
ITALIAN FEST: The 32nd annual Brier Hill Italian Fest will take place Thursday to Sunday at Calvin and Victoria streets in Youngstown. The festival will include games, food, vendors and Italian music. There will be a Morra contest at 7:30 p.m. Friday, hot pepper contest at 6 p.m Saturday and wine-tasting contest at 4 p.m. Sunday. Hours are 4 p.m. to midnight Thursday and Friday, 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday and 1 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
CONCERT SET: The Girard Recreation Department will host The Dead Flowers Band at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Park. In case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled.
VENDOR SALE: The Austintown Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host a garage and vendor sale 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Austintown library branch on South Raccoon Road. GATHERING PLACE: A Gathering Place event is scheduled 11 a.m. today at the Presbyterian Church Pavilion in Canfield. Karey Suevekey, master gardener, will speak on the life cycle of butterflies. A box lunch will be provided. This is a community outreach social program for seniors. No reservations are needed. Call 330-360-0419.
FREE SHOES: The Chestnut Ridge Church of God, 7215 Chestnut Ridge Road, will host a free tennis shoe distribution 3:30 to 7 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday. The shoes are for children in grades K-12 who reside or are attending schools in Hubbard, Masury, Brookfield, Girard or Liberty. Those youth needing shoes must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or guardian who must show proof of residency. There is a limit of one pair of shoes per student.
FAMILY DAY: American Legion Post 235 of Girard is hosting a Community Family Day as part of its membership drive on Saturday. All families are invited to attend the event at the post at 11 High St., across from the city building and gymnasium. The event is for children and adults.
SUMMER CAMP: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown is offering an end-of-summer camp for students in grades kindergarten through fifth from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 19 to 30, and Sept. 3 at the center, 505 Gypsy Lane. Children will take part in arts and crafts, science experiments, swimming and recreational activities. A field trip is planned for the week of Aug. 19. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided, but students must bring a packed lunch.

FARMERS MARKET: The Hubbard Farmers Market is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday through September in Tylee Park, 13 W. Liberty St. The market is celebrating 10 years with 20 vendors. There will be bakers, makers and other artisans, Local music will be provided every week.
