SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS: Simply Slavic is seeking applicants for its 2024 round of academic scholarships for students attending Youngstown State University. YSU students who have completed their freshman year and are enrolled at the undergraduate or graduate level are encouraged to apply. All applicants must submit a 500-word narrative on how Slavic culture has influenced their lives. Funds for tuition and student expenses such as books, lodging and study abroad programs can be used.
The scholarship is supported through a partnership with local brewer Modern Methods Brewing Co. The deadline for scholarship applicants is Wednesday. The winners will be announced in mid-August.

CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT: A program “Journey of a Civil War Reenactor: Story of Steffon Wydell Jones” will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Struthers Historical Society, 50 Terrace St.
TRUNK TO TREASURE SALE: The St. Christine Youth Celebrate Team is having a Trunk to Treasure Sale 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church parking lot at 3165 S. Schenley Ave. Proceeds are to benefit St. Christine’s Celebrate Team. Admission is free. Trunk sale spots are $15 for the first space, $10 for each additional space — rain or shine — no refunds. RURITANS CAR SHOW: The Fairfield Ruritans will hold their 30th Annual Car Show noon to 3 p.m. Sunday on South Main Street in Columbiana. Antique, custom, classic cars, tractors and trucks are welcome, with trophies awarded to the top entries and dash plaques to the first 150 registrations. There will also be food and drink available, a 50/50 drawing, an auction and music all afternoon. Registration starts at 9 a.m. For more information, call Rick Urmson at 330-921-1173.
MARKET PLACE: The Inspiring Minds Youth Marketplace, will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Youngstown Business Incubator, 241 W. Federal St. The marketplace will feature showcases, where each participant will have a booth to display his or her business plans and products.

BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL: The South Side Community Garden, 112 Williamson Ave., Youngstown, is hosting its 12th annual Butterfly Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine. Free admission and food. Feed live butterflies and receive a free spicebush or buttonbush (per family, while they last), donated by First Energy. There will be face painting and balloons, service dogs, a fire truck, coloring pages and music. The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County’s Bookmobile will give out free Monarch Caterpillar Kits (one per family, while they last). Donations welcome.
OHIO’S PREHISTORIC HISTORY: The Mahoning Valley Archeological Society will host Mansfield native Mark Hersman as guest speaker when the society meets 6 p.m. Sunday at Beard Cabin, Boardman Park. The event is free and open to the public.
Hersman is a lifelong teacher, speaker and collector of Ohio’s prehistoric artifacts. He is the president and co-founder of the Johnny Appleseed Chapter with the Archaeological Society of Ohio.
DR. MURRAY PRESENTATION: Youngstown plastic surgeon Richard Murray will be the subject of a presentation by Cleveland researcher Ginger Williams at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Denny’s restaurant meeting room, 4020 Belmont Ave., Liberty, for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society’s Memories of a Lifetime Programs. All programs are open to the public. Member admission is $10. Non-member admission is $15. Refreshments and live entertainment are provided. A 50/50 raffle will be held to benefit the society’s education mission. Reservations are suggested. Walk-ins admitted, based upon seat availability. SAFER STREETS: The Healthy Community Partnership Active Transportation Team will present Safer Street Series 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday during the Youngstown Flea on Federal Street. The event will include discussion on exploring a better Federal Street with safe street demonstrations.
PRESENTATION: Steffon Wyndell Jones will present a program 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Youngstown Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., on George Wydell Jones, the lead singer of the Edsels. The discussion will include Jones’ journey through his music career told by his son, Steffon, an Oak Hill historian.
CLEANUP SET: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will host a cleanup 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday with those participating asked to meet at JCC pavilion, 505 Gypsy Lane. The group will clean up litter throughout the area. There will be a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m. and there are two time frames for volunteers to choose.
FLAG REMOVAL: The Veterans Service Commission will remove flags from the graves at Calvary Cemetery, 248 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers are being sought and those who participate will be allowed to take home the flags. For information, call 330-740-2450 ext. 8387.

YOUNGSTOWN FIRST FRIDAY: Youngstown’s First Friday event will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday throughout downtown. First Friday is a free event to kick off the beginning of each month with music, movies, entertainment, networking, food, drink specials, shopping, art exhibits and family-oriented activities. “Barbie” will be shown at 9 p.m. on a giant outdoor screen. Stepping Out Line Dancing will host dancing on Phelps Street at 5:30 p.m., and OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center will be half-priced admission 4 to 8 p.m.
HUBBARD FARM MARKET: The 10th annual Hubbard Farmers Market will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday through September at Tylee Park, 13 W. Liberty St. The event will include farmers, makers and bakers.
COMMISSION CLOSED: The Veterans Service Commission 345 Oak Hill Ave. Youngstown, will be closed Friday for flag removal at the Forest Lawn Cemetery.
FOOD PANTRY: Churchill United Methodist Church, 189 Churchill-Hubbard Road, Liberty, will hold a food pantry from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday.
CLEANUP RESCHEDULED: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will hold its second annual Northside Community Cleanup July 14.
There are two shifts: 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m. Participants should meet at the JCC Pavilion, 505 Gypsy Lane.
This year, as part of the Youngstown Litter League, the JCC will compete with other communities around Ohio to see who can pick up the most litter.

PARK STARTS APP: Mill Creek MetroParks have launched a new mobile app. It includes offline mapping and navigation so users can access the app without a cell phone signal. Visitors can use the app to navigate trails, locate parking, restrooms, picnic areas and other park amenities, as well as access information about the park.
