ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE: The Western Reserve Joint Fire District is hosting its final 2023 anniversary celebration open house 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Station 93, 2050 S. Hubbard Road, Lowellville. There will be activities for children. The public can tour the remodeled facilities and see fire vehicles.
BIRD PROGRAM: The Girard Free Library will host a program on "Soaring Our Skies: The Bald Eagle" at 6 p.m. today. Amy Reeher of the Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District will discuss the country's national bird. Free educational material will be provided.
There will be a program on international foods at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday where participants will be able to try different snacks.
The Akron Zoo will be at the library at 11 a.m. Wednesday. There will be a mind, body and sole interactive and educational animal program that gives participants a chance to test their own athletic abilities.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Broadhead and Wydell Memorial Veteran Team is in need of volunteers to do cemetery surveys and compile a veterans list at Oakhill Cemetery and Tod Homestead Cemetery. For information, call Steffon at 330-301-7365.
RETIREES TO MEET: The Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio Chapter 10, District 2 for Trumbull, Mahoning and Ashtabula counties, will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive.
FUNDRAISER HELPS ANIMALS: Small World Animal Rescue will host a benefit yard sale from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at 945 N. State St., Girard, The event will take place rain or shine. Items are $1 to $5. All proceeds help animals. For information, call 330-727-1878.
FOOD GIVEAWAY: Bethel Church of God in Christ, 3147 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown, will host a food giveaway at noon Wednesday.
RUMMAGE SALE: Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4490 Norquest Blvd, Austintown, will host a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
A prize drawing will be at 4 p.m. Sunday. There also will be a basket raffle.
CLOVERBUD CAMP: The Ohio State University Mahoning County Extension, 490 S. Broad St, Canfield, will host the Cloverbud Camp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 18 and 19. Children up to age 8 will be able to explore 4-H activities. The registration fee is the day camp is $15 per child. Forms can be dropped off at the extension offices.
FUSED GLASS BOWL: The Paul and Yetta Gluck School of Visual Arts at the Jewish Community Center in Youngstown is offering a fused glass bowl workshop for ages 18 and older from 6 to 8 p.m. July 18.
Participants will design a bowl using fused glass to create new addition to their home decor. Cost is $30 for JCC members and $40 for non-members. Registration is needed by Friday. Visit jccyounsgtown.org.
RELAY FOR LIFE: George "Nitro" Caskey has walked numerous relays to raise awareness and support cancer research. He has helped plan and organize countless benefits for families and individuals battling the devastating disease. His friends are banding together to help Caskey, who was recently diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. They are planning a benefit for him from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ice House Inn, 5516 W. Webb Road, Austintown.
Caskey is an avid motorcycle rider. His father was a retired Philadelphia police officer and Caskey is a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 372, having held various offices and positions and assisting with numerous causes.
The benefit in Caskey's honor will include a spaghetti dinner, basket and 50/50 raffles, and live music.
