FRATERNITIES RECOGNIZED: Youngstown State University’s fraternities have received national recognition. Both student leaders and one of YSU’s chapters were honored with awards and scholarships for their excellence and accomplishments.

Clay Miller, recipient of the 2023 Ellsworth C. Dent Man of the Year Award by Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity graduated from YSU in May. With 59 active chapters and more than 2,000 members, Sigma Tau Gamma chose 10 of its members to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and as finalists for the Ellsworth C. Dent Man of the Year award.

Niko Mastorides was named True Gentleman of the Year, the highest honor bestowed on an undergraduate member by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Mastorides, a criminal justice major, graduated in May. With more than 12,000 members, representing 220 chapters, SAE chooses one member annually based on scholastic achievement, fraternity involvement, university leadership and community service to receive the True Gentleman of the Year Award.

Mastorides received his award during the 167th Sigma Alpha Epsilon National Convention in St. Louis in June. Also during the convention, YSU’s chapter of SAE (Ohio Alpha) was recognized as the “best chapter in the Realm.” SAE – Ohio Alpha was awarded the John O. Mosley Award for Fraternity Zeal, after four years of being a top five finalist in the country. This is the first time Ohio Alpha has received this honor, which recognizes the best chapter in the nation.

SAE members Michael Chaplow, a finance major, and Jacob Clemente, an accounting major, also received rewards for outstanding chapter president and treasurer, respectively.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL GIVEAWAY: Behind Closed Doors Ministries will hold a back-to-school giveaway 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Harding Park in Hubbard.

QUILTS ON DISPLAY: Patriotic quilts will be on display at the Columbiana County Fair Monday through Aug. 6. The theme for this year’s special category is “It’s A Grand Old Flag.”

All quilts will be presented to those nominated at a recognition ceremony 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at the fairgrounds. DEBUTANTE APPLICATIONS: The Mahoning County Junior Civic League is accepting debutante applications from minority high school seniors (2023-24 academic year) for the 65th annual Cinderella Ball on Nov. 24. The deadline to apply is Monday.

The JCL introduced the Cinderella Ball in 1955, which became the organization’s major fundraiser, awarding over $650,000 in scholarships for more than 68 years.

KIDS RALLY IN THE VALLEY: Beautiful Feet Ministries will present the third annual Youth and Kids Rally in the Valley from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at 850 Hitchcock Road, Boardman, followed by a free after-event from 9 p.m. to midnight at 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem.

The purpose of this free event is to bring peace, hope, love and unity to families in surrounding areas and communities. There will be singing, dancing, food and basketball, dodgeball or cornhole games.

Featured will be gospel rappers Justin Padilla, Kyle Costal and Dre’vatne Baldridge; praise / dance team members Maria Haynes and Faith Nicole; and the Beautiful Feet Worship Team.

Main speaker is Klaus Chavis. Michael Haynes will present his testimony, and Antonio Defrank is the youth pastor.

People must attend the youth rally to attend the after-event.

SWING FORE JA: Registration is open for Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio’s third annual Swing Fore JA Golf Classic on Aug. 7 at the Lake Club in Poland. The event raises funds for JA’s youth financial literacy, entrepreneurship and career-readiness programs that benefit K-12 students throughout Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

This exclusive event, presented by The Muransky Companies, will be limited to 32 foursomes / 128 golfers. Foursome packages include 18 holes of golf, beverages, lunch, southern-style BBQ dinner buffet, golfer “thank you” gifts, food trucks, contests on the course and prize giveaways. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start at 11. Golfers will have use of all The Lake Club golf facilities prior to the start of the event. The deadline to register is Friday.

Junior Achievement also has announced that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Michael J. Alexander Memorial Scholarship, which will benefit a high school junior or senior in Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties.

ITALIAN FESTIVAL: The 23rd annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival will be Thursday to Sunday at the church grounds at 343 Via Mt. Carmel, Youngstown. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. The festival includes an Italian auction, little prince and princess contest, scholarship presentation, children’s area, crafts and activities, morra tournament, food, historical table display and raffles. There will be a procession at noon on Sunday following the 11 a.m. Mass. Admission to the festival is $5 with those 12 and under admitted free.

FIREWORKS RESCHEDULED: Boardman Park’s Independence Day Celebration and fireworks display, which was canceled earlier this month because of weather, is now taking place in conjunction with the free Family Night in the Park event on Saturday.

The festivities kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Maag Theatre where there will be bounce houses, wagon rides and an entertainment show for the kids.

At 7:30 p.m., live music from Rudy and the Professionals will begin. In lieu of an outdoor movie, there will be a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. following the concert. Concessions also will be available. Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

CAMPBELL FESTIVAL: Campbell will host its annual summer fest 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Roosevelt Park on Sycamore Drive. There will be basket raffles, a 50-50 raffle, a cake wheel, rides, games, food and live music. The band 8 Balls will play 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by The Infidels 8 to 9 p.m. DJ Chico also will spin tunes throughout the festival.

COMMUNITY APPRECIATION: The Gibson Agency of Girard will host its annual Community Appreciation Day 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at their offices, 984 Tibbetts-Wick Road in Girard.

The event is open to the public and food will be provided by the agency from local food truck vendors. Giveaway items also will be up for grabs.

Gibson asks that those attending bring a nonperishable donation to contribute to the food drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. The most needed items are peanut butter, cereal, tuna fish, canned vegetables, canned fruit and dry pasta.

To make a donation to Second Harvest without attending the event, you may drop items off at the Gibson Insurance offices during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

BLOCKWATCH ART: The Northside Blockwatch and the Butler Institute of American Art will co-host an outdoor art event memorializing the deceased family members and friends of the blockwatch organization noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event will take place in the outside gardens near Harding Elementary School, Cordova Avenue, Youngstown. It is open to the public.

SPIRITUAL HEALING: The Unity Spiritual Centre, 1226 Naylor Lloyd Road, Liberty, will offer a special evening of spiritual healing at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The session will be conducted by Bryan Baskett, who is a Reiki master. For information, call the center at 330-539-0122.

BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL: The 11th annual Butterfly Festival at Southside Community Garden, 107 Williamson Drive, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday rain or shine.

It will feature free food, vendors and face painting. People can feed butterflies. The Jericho Project will provide music and a firetruck will be on site.

GARAGE SALE: Alzheimer’s Network volunteers will hold a summer garage sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, between Cornersburg and Canfield. The Alzheimer’s Network is a nonprofit organization providing family support groups in the area as well as educational seminars for caregivers. For information call 330-788-9755.

SAFETY DAY: Beaver Township will hold a kids fun and safety day from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Woodworth Park. The event will include a bounce around, petting zoo, pony rides and safety forces.

ELVIS TRIBUTE FOR DONATIONS: Salem’s Endre Samu will perform an Elvis tribute show that will benefit the Brightside Project and its ongoing East Palestine train derailment relief efforts. The show is at 5:30 p.m. July 29, at Boneshakers in the Timberlanes Complex in Salem.

Samu currently works as a Kentucky State Police trooper. He has been in law enforcement for more than 40 years and enjoys taking a break from his day job to bring some positivity to the people who watch him perform.

FUNDRAISER TO HELP MISSION: Friends and Family of Justin R. House, a firefighter and U.S. airman who lost his life to suicide, will be hosting the third annual Justin R. House Softball Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at Center Park off Churchill Road, Liberty. Funds raised at the event will benefit the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley and Stop Soldier Suicide. House died in 2020. The first softball tournament was held in 2021 and raised more than $3,000, the tournament in 2022 raised $6,000.

EASTERSEALS AUCTION: Easterseals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties 18th annual “Auction at Margaritaville” is being held from 6 to 10 p.m. (doors open at 5:30) today at St. Michael Family Life Center, 340 N. Broad St., Canfield. Cost: $40 per person or $320 for a table of eight.

DONATION DRIVE TODAY: ONE Health Ohio and RISE Recovery is hosting a donation drive presentation at 10 a.m. today, to Mahoning and Trumbull County Children Services agencies. The presentation will take place at ONE Health Ohio’s Youngstown office located at 726 Wick Ave., Youngstown.

In May, all ONE Health Ohio and RISE Recovery locations hosted a donation drive to support and increase awareness of the work children services agencies do for children in the area who may need their assistance. The goal for the organization was 500 items to be equally divided, but staff donated approximately 1,800 items ranging from new clothing, new or gently used toys and toiletries.

Representatives will be in attendance from ONEHealth Ohio, Mahoning County Children Services and Trumbull County Children Services.

BIGFOOT EVENT: The Friends of Beaver Creek State Park are presenting its annual Bigfoot event beginning with free camping at the park today and Saturday night. Camp setup starts at 11 a.m. today in group camp 3, located in the Gretchen Lock area off Sprucevale Road. Campers are responsible for bringing their own camping equipment and supplies including food. Researcher Jack Warren will be at the campsite.

There will be speakers on Bigfoot in the barn beginning at noon Sunday with a program hosted by Jack Warren. The event is free with the purchase of a pancake breakfast. The speakers include Doug Waller, author of five books and researcher on Bigfoot sightings for 15 years; Les O’Dell, a researcher and founder of West Virginia Cryptids and Strange Encounters; Jay Fouch, cofounder of the Coshocton County Bigfoot Research; David Wolf, producer of “Exposing the Strange Hudson;” Johnny Freeman, Ernie Davieau and boots on the ground researchers and investigators.

There also will be numerous vendors in the village.

LEMONADE FUNDRAISER: The Harper, Palmer, Landry and Owen’s annual lemonade stand fundraiser to benefit Rick D’Amico will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at 5370 Cloisters Drive in Canfield. In 2022, D’Amico was struck by a truck and critically injured. After multiple surgeries at the Cleveland Clinic it was decided that he would need to undergo an amputation. He has been in a wheelchair and unable to work, drive or do any other activities. Funds will help D’Amico with his recovery.

UPTON OPEN HOUSE: The Upton Association will host an open house with artisans with demonstrations from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the house, 380 Mahoning Ave., Warren. Visitors to the Upton House can tour the home of Harriet Taylor Upton. Linda Shevel of Three Sheep Gallery in Boardman will show guests how to use a spinning wheel and a small floor loom for weaving. Five members of the Lacers of the Lake will demonstrate making bobbin lace, netting, tatting, Teneriffe and button making.

SUMMERFEST AT PARISH: The St. Nicholas Greek Summerfest will mark its 39th year celebration Thursday to Sunday at 220 N. Walnut St., Youngstown, across from Choffin Career and Technical Center. The event will include food, music and dancing. There also will be pony rides, dunking booths, a magic show and gift card auction. HISTORICAL PRESENTATION: A historical program on the first black regiment of the Civil War will take place ≠≠11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning Coumty, 305 Wick Ave., Youngstown. Discussion will be on the 5th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry, which was organized at Camp Delaware, Ohio, and will be led by local historian Steffon Jones.

GARBAGE COLLECTION: The Youngstown residential garbage collection will be delayed by one day as there will be no collection on Tuesday because of the July 4 holiday. Today will be normal service but every other day will be delayed by one day. To avoid missing service, customers are asked to place trash at curbside the evening before the service day.

TRAIN DISPLAY: The Moss Ancestral Home, 1499 Burnett St., Mineral Ridge, will host a train display 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The display will be trains of the HO scale. The display will resemble the Mineral Ridge Railroad Coal Train and Niles Lisbon Railroad from Mineral Ridge to Niles. There also will be tours of the Moss Ancestral Home. New this year is a showcase of Mineral Ridge and the surrounding areas with pictures and memorabilia housed in the building across the street from the home.

There will be a dedication of a National Register of Historic Places plaque at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Moss Ancestral Home is an 1830s’ Pennsylvania Bank style home. Jacob Moss lived there from 1859 to 1899 and one of his descendants has restored it to a museum.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES: The Emmanuel Community Care Center in Girard will be providing school supplies to children in grades kindergarten to 12th whose families are registered at the center. Registered families can sign up at 330-545-4301 through Aug. 11.

HUBBARD MARKET: The annual Hubbard Ohio Farmers Market is marking its ninth season at Tylee Park, 13 W. Liberty St. There will be various vendors and farmers taking part from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday through Sept. 24.
