Wilson High Hall of Fame dinner planned

YOUNGSTOWN — The Woodrow Wilson High School Hall of Fame Dinner will be May 28 at Mr. Anthony’s to honor graduates of the now closed school for their accomplishments and extraordinary service.

The event will benefit the Woodrow Wilson Legacy Scholarship at Youngstown State University.

Tickets cost $45 per person. The deadline for reservations is May 13 by calling 330-744-6954 or visiting the website-http://ytownwilsonhalloffame.com.

Woodrow Wilson High School graduated its first class in 1939.

The school closed in 2007 and was razed the following year.

The Wilson Alumni Committee has chosen the following 11 inductees into the school hall of fame:

• Irving Lev, class of 1940, military service in the Air Force-received the Distinguished Flying Cross, formed Louis Lev and Son Inc.-building housing for underprivileged people, community service with the Jewish Federation, Goodwill Industries, the Doris Burdman Home and the Planning Commission of Youngstown.

• David Adams, class of 1960, research engineer, production supervisor for E.I. DuPont, model maker for Little Tikes and Graco toys, organized the Wilson All Sports Reunion to commemorate Woodrow Wilson’s 1946 State Championship football team.

• Irene Tunanidas, class of 1966, longtime Sign Language and Language Arts educator/tutor in the Youngstown/Warren/Poland schools, advocate for those who are deaf, counselor-aide for Yo. BVR, volunteer for American Red Cross, Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center, and Easter Seals.

• Larry Kacenga, class of 1970, doctorate in physical therapy at Chatham University, associate staff at Youngstown State University, involved with the Boardman Rotary, served on committees at the YMCA, copartnered the Challenge Performance and Struthers Speed Camp program.

• Stephanie L. Sferra, class of 1971, graphic designer/public relations at the Corporate Headquarters for Arby’s, served as executive director of the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau, sits on the Board of Directors for the Trumbull Art Gallery (TAG), records reading programs for the visually impaired.

• Gene Cook, class of 1980, Firefighter Academy teacher at Choffin Career Center, Youngstown City Firefighter for 26 years, volunteer CPR instructor, EMT for Youngstown Christian School, volunteer baseball and flag football coach, firefighter recognition awards for life saving, service and dedication.

• Michele Motosko Merkle, class of 1981, innovative leader in the field of aviation, led the FAA in researchdeveloped concepts for the Air Traffic Control programs, member of the Government’s executive service, director of the Air Navigation Bureau at the International Civil Aviation Organization.

• Howard Pincham Jr., class of 1982, Chief information officer at Koinonia Homes-provider of living spaces for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, served in various lay ministry capacities, active in local information technology communities.

• David Cook, class of 1986, Air Force veteran -Operation Freedom, Youngstown City Firefighter- 29 years, volunteered with Heart Reach program -donated the paint/painted houses on the South Side, volunteer coach for Mill Creek baseball and softball, firefighter recognition awards for rescue, service, and dedication.

• Lorie Quigley Barber, class of 1986, Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications, produces WKBN First News at Noon for the past 25 yrs., VP of The National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians, considered a pioneer of fetal surgery for spina bifida, serves on Parish Council at her church.

• Charles W. Colvin Jr., class of 2005, director of Community Affairs-Aetna, owner of LV8 studios/Loud 102.3 Radio Station, served as director of Community Outreach & Special Projects -City Kids Care, production director & technical engineer for Y Town Broadcasting.
