PDC GRADUATES: The Professional Development Center, a division of Flying HIGH Inc., will hold its spring graduation at 2 p.m. today at its main offices in Youngstown, 6 W. Federal St. Forty individuals earned credentials in several vocational tracks including chemical dependency counseling, nursing, welding, machining, and commercial truck driving.

At the ceremony, Guy Coviello, president and CEO of Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, will be the recipient of the Eagle Award, which recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary efforts to provide opportunities for people to make their lives better and to help community members work together.

The PDC operates Job Placement Welcome Centers at 6 West Federal St., Youngstown and at 237 Main Ave. SW, Warren, where valley residents can walk in and have access to immediate job opportunities. The welcome centers are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. The PDC, recognized by the Ohio Board of Career Colleges and Schools, has also offered vocational training since 2011.

LIBRARY STROLL: Lepper Library presents Story Stroll along the Greenway Bike trail -- Planting a Rainbow by Lois Elhert through Friday. The Story Stroll is daily and starts near the Lisbon Trailhead on the Greenway Bike Trail just past mile marker '0'. The program is made possible due to a grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.

HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS: The Board of the Mahoning County Agricultural Society (Canfield Fair) is seeking applications for the Mahoning County Agricultural Hall of Fame for 2023.

There have been many individuals who have provided their time and talents to enhance the agricultural industry and develop the agricultural community through education and service.

This program strives to identify and recognize those individuals, be they farmers, farm couples, educators or agricultural leaders who have had a positive effect on the growth and advancement of Mahoning County agriculture and beyond.

Nomination forms are available through the Canfield Fair office and at www.canfieldfair.com. Nominations will be due by Friday to the Canfield Fair office.

Upon selection by the Board of the Mahoning County Agricultural Society, the recipients will be announced and awarded at a ceremony during the 177th Canfield Fair.

PRESS CLUB TO MEET: The Youngstown Press Club will meet for a summer winery event from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the L'uva Bella Winery, 6597 Center Road, Lowellville. Owners Marisa Sergi and her husband, Evan Schumann, will explain how their local winery grew into distribution of their products across nine states with their innovative marketing strategy.

Within three years after acquiring the business, Sergi and Schumann were named to this year's Forbes 30 Under 30 list of young entrepreneurs.

HEALTHSOURCE OFFERS SHRED-A-THON: Dr. Ashley Rice, a veteran of the United States Air Force, is owner and operator of Healthsource of Boardman, a chiropractic office located at 6775 Applewood Blvd., Boardman.

Rice and her staff have organized a community event to feature other local small businesses in an effort to build a strong community of entrepreneurs and community-based organizations.

In order to reach all locals, the event will feature a Protect-N-Shred truck that locals can use to shred unwanted papers for free. The Shred-a-thon and Community Event will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at HealthSource of Boardman.

HELPING HANDS: Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, Canfield has new and gently used clothing. It is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday.

STREETSCAPE 2023: Youngstown CityScape is hosting Streetscape 2023 and its 26th annual Planting Day at 9 a.m. on Saturday in downtown Youngstown.

There will be some changes to where those attending will meet for breakfast and lunch because of the construction downtown.

This year, the group will meet at Penguin City Brewing.

LITTLE BLACK DRESSES: The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be one of the sponsors of the Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy fundraiser. The event, organized by the Literacy Society, will be at 6 p.m. June 1 at The Lake Club in Poland.

Women are asked to wear their favorite little black dress to this event, while men who are attending are asked to wear a black suit. Event organizers say the black symbolizes the print in books -- the written word.

Guests also are asked to bring a copy of a book by their favorite author to swap with other attendees. Also, guests can donate gently used or brand new children's books. Various shops will be selling accessories.

The ticket price is $40 each.

Proceeds will benefit the Carol A. Bacon Literary Society Fund and the Martha Muransky Children's Literacy Fund. A portion of the proceeds from the participating boutiques also will benefit this fund.

GREAT STRIDES WALK: The northern Ohio chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host the 24th annual Mahoning / Trumbull Great Strides walk Sunday at Boardman Park's Masters Pavilion. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 2 p.m.

This walk is held to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis, a rare, genetic disease that progressively limits the ability to breathe and ultimately causes premature death. No admission cost. Donations are welcome.

On May 5, a panel of pizza experts met to discuss and select a winning pitch from area fifth-, sixth- and seveneth-grade students, who worked in teams to create a brand new flavor of pizza targeted to a market of their peers.

Team MM&A from Liberty Local Schools created The BBQ Bacon Wing Deluxe, which features crispy bacon, boneless wings, cheese and barbeque sauce on a garlic crust.

Students will have the opportunity to taste test their creation on Friday and finalize the details before setting a release date and organizing a Community Day event to premiere their specialty pizza.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS: The 12th annual Special Olympics Trumbull County Invitational hosted by Girard City School District, Fairhaven School and the Girard-Liberty Rotary will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Nearly 300 athletes and hundreds of volunteers from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties and Youngstown State University will take part.

LIBRARY CLOSED: The Liberty Library, 415 Churchill-Hubbard Road, is closed today through Saturday for work to replace the building's entry doors and tilework in the vestibule. The library is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m. Monday.

PLANT SALE: The Gardeners of Greater Youngstown's annual spring plant sale will be today and Saturday at MASCO greenhouse at the corner of South Avenue and Bev Road. The sale is open to the public and funds the group's scholarship program, providing funds to students pursuing a career in horticulture.

Many healthy plants are available and ready for planting.

Members will be on location and are able to describe the plants, how they were grown and the best planting tips for local gardeners.

COUNTRY FOR KIDS FEST: Northeast Ohio Adoption Services will hold a Country for Kids Music Festival featuring Chris Higbee from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Griffin-Sloas Airfield in Warren.

Karli Datish will serve as the evening's emcee. The event will include food trucks, beverages, a 50/50 raffle and an auction. Human Way, a band from Roanoke, Va., opens the show, followed by Nashville country artist Alex Seier.

MOSS HOME OPENS: The Moss Ancestral Home, and the Mineral Ridge and Surrounding Areas Showcase, will be open 1 to 4 p.m. the second Sunday of every month from May to November. The Moss Ancestral Home is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 1499 Burnett St., Mineral Ridge, and is an 1830s brick home with a Pennsylvania Bank-style architecture. The showcase is across the street filled with memorabilia and pictures.

BLACK BEARS IN OHIO: Black bears once were considered locally extinct. However, sightings in Ohio have been increasing since the 1990s. Learn about the biology, habitat, behavior and management of this endangered species from Amy Reeher of the Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District, who will speak at 6 p.m. Monday at the Girard Free Library. LETTER CARRIERS FOOD DRIVE: Saturday marks the 31st anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Letter carriers walk through the community every day, often coming face to face with a sad reality for too many -- hunger.

Each year, on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from their customers. These donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to people in the Trumbull-Mahoning county areas who need help.

Over the course of the 31-year history, the food drive has collected more than 1.88 billion pounds of food, thanks to a postal service universal delivery network that spans the nation.

Participating in this year's NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is simple: Just leave your non-perishable food donations in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday, and your letter carrier will do the rest.

CHOCOLATE FEST: Piggyback Foundation of Youngstown is bringing back its signature fundraiser the Chocolate Fest with the 2023 event slated for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Embassy Banquet Center. All of the money from the fundraiser will benefit local children in families battling serious disease.

Each Chocolate Fest participant will receive a 12-inch platter with chocolate from various local bakeries and chocolatiers.

Tickets are $50 a person or $375 for a reserved table of eight. All tickets include a chocolate smorgasbord platter and pasta dinner. Cash bar will be available for adult beverages. The event also will feature basket raffles and a 50-50 drawing.

PRESS CLUB FREEDOM DAY: The Youngstown Press Club will observe World Press Freedom Day on Wednesday by reading the names of journalists killed while practicing their profession during the past year. The event, which is part of a worldwide recognition, will begin at noon at St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1025 N. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown.

The year 2022 marked a notable increase in journalists in the line of fire worldwide, with 67 journalists and media workers killed, compared to 45 in 2021.

Last year's death toll was the highest since 2018, according to the annual report of the Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide.

After the reading, the church's pastor, the Rev. Mykola Zomchak, will lead a short memorial service, followed by a coffee reception, hosted by the church.

There is no charge for this event, but those planning to attend are asked to register at youngstownpressclub.com.

SKILLED TRADES CELEBRATION: National Skilled Trades Day is celebrated the first Wednesday in May. This year, the celebration is Wednesday at Penguin City Brewery, 460 E. Federal St., Youngstown. CMT is teaming up with Penguin City for "Cheers to Beers and Careers."

Show up in a skilled trades uniform and get $1 off a beer. Paige's Deli food truck will be selling food and a kid-friendly beverage will be available.

Children can dress up as their favorite skilled trades worker (or in a career outfit of their choice) and they can trick-or-treat around the brewery. There will even be a skilled trades costume contest.

ABWA TO MEET: The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women's Association will host its May 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Mill Creek Chapter will be electing officers for 2023-24 at the meeting.

PLANT SALE: Copeland Oaks Retirement Community, 800 S. 15th St., Sebring, will host a plant sale 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Beeghly Fountain, to support its library.

Although Copeland Oaks provides the space for the library and the Friends of the Library provides some funds, this volunteer organization relies on the plant sale as its main source of operating income.

AAUW LEARNS OF FOOD DESERT: The American Association of University Women of Youngstown will host its meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Fresh Market, 2915 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown. Speaker will be Susan Payton, local chef, caterer and manager of the market, speaking on the "Oasis in the Food Desert." The Glenwood Fresh Market provides year-round access to free fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy food items to residents of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
