Austintown principal earns reading award

AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Elementary Principal Cathy Dorbish has received the Amplify Science of Reading Standout School Principal Award.

This is an award she earned largely for her leadership in the implementation of a new reading curriculum at the elementary building.

Out of 300 nominations throughout the country, Dorbish was one of three finalists selected. She learned of her selection Thursday during a virtual awards ceremony.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Science of Reading Standout School Principal Award. When I came to be principal at AES three years ago, we took the first step and started learning what the science of reading is. Three years into this new way of teaching, we still feel like we have just begun our journey of learning.

“We are now implementing the strategies based on the Science of Reading research, and I am excited to tell you that even in these early stages, we are seeing positive results in our students’ reading success,” Dorbish said.

The curriculum, Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts, is a core curriculum for elementary-age students, combining diverse content knowledge in history, science, literature and the arts with systematic, research-based foundational skills instruction.
