Food bank ready to help in area

SECOND HARVEST ONE HELPING AT A TIME: September is Hunger Action Month and is the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks’ awareness campaign. Each September, Second Harvest Food Bank re-ignites its commitment to making food accessible to all people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

This year, because of the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food Bank and its network of member agencies are providing food to friends and neighbors more than ever before. Each week, nearly 20,000 requests for emergency food assistance are filled in the tri-county area.

The food bank could not meet this need without the support of the Mahoning Valley community. The food bank once again is asking the community to join the movements and help end hunger, one helping at a time. You can host a food drive or fundraiser by calling 330-792-5522; make a donation of $1 to provide six meals, at www.mahoning valleysecondharvest.org; or wear orange on Sept. 10 and share your photos on Facebook at SHFBMV.

COMPASSIONATE CREATIVITY: The Paul and Yetta Gluck School of Visual Arts at the Jewish Community Center will offer Compassionate Creativity 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Sept. 11 at the JCC, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown. Participants will create artwork for a first responder in their life or community to express gratitude for the brave caregivers on the front line to mark the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Families can take part for free. Visit jcc.youngstown.org to register.

AUXILIARY TO MEET: The Lake Milton American Legion Auxiliary Unit 737 will hold its first meeting of the 2020-21 year 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Lake Milton Legion Hall. This is the first meeting since March when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Social distancing and masks will be required.
