JAZZ AND DESSERT FEST: The Fitch Alumni Jazz Band will host the fifth annual Jazz and Dessert Festival 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at Austintown Middle School cafetorium, Raccoon Road.

AMS, Fitch Jazz 1, Fitch Jazz 2 and the alumni will all perform while more than 40 desserts are served by local amateurs and professionals ranging in age from 21 to 93.

Admission is $6 per person and includes tickets for 10 dessert samples and a small carryout container. Beverages are also sold at the event.

The event benefits the Austintown Band Programs and is organized by the Austintown Band Parents Club Inc. Awards will be given for best displays for the competing dessert makers.

“Honorary” alumnus former band director Joe Pellegrini, who started the Austintown Jazz program in the 1970s, will perform with the alumni. There will also be an auction of bakery treats donated by the participants. Vendors will also sell additional items beginning at 8 p.m.

POLAR PLUNGE AT LAKE: The 14th annual Mosquito Lake Polar Plunge will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mosquito Lake State Park in Bazetta. Participants will take a chilly dip to raise money for Special Olympics at the first event in Special Olympics Ohio’s 2020 Polar Plunge season.

Participants raise money to earn the privilege of jumping into the frigid waters of Mosquito Lake. Costume contest in which prizes are awarded for creativity and overall wackiness begin at 12:45 p.m.

The family-friendly event encourages spectators to come and witness it all, free of charge. There is more information and participants can register at MosquitoLake PolarPlunge.org. A post-plunge party will be held 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cortland Moose Family Center and will feature awards for top fundraising teams and individuals.

CPR CLASS: Jewish Community Center of Youngstown is offering a First Aid/CPR/AED class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Feb. 15, March 14 or April 18. The cost is $75 for JCC members and $100 for nonmembers.
