District reaches out to community

SCHOOLS SEEK INPUT: the Youngstown City School District wants to hear from the public in an online survey. The community priorities survey is posted on the district website at www.ycsd.org. The district is asking parents / guardians, staff and members of the community to complete the survey by Jan. 28. The input will be used to help shape the future of the district as plans to improve academics as well as how school climate and culture are developed. The district has identified four focus areas to target as leaders mold the district’s future. Areas are teaching and learning, opportunity for scholars, climate and culture, and growth and management. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and responses are confidential. Links to the survey are also posted on the district’s social media pages.

SOCIETY PLANS TOUR: The Salem Historical Society is planning an Underground Railroad tour 11 a.m. Feb. 8 on the Quakertown Trolley. The docent takes passengers back in time to the late 1850s. Following the sharing of many stories, the travelers will return to the 21st century with a better understanding of the plight of slaves, the working of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement that flourished in Salem prior to the Civil War. Since the homes are private and entrance not possible, flashed on a screen inside the trolley will be slides to show pictures of the insides of the homes, Underground Railroad hiding places and several abolitionists who lived in or visited them. The tour will last approximately an hour with loading at 239 S. Lundy St., and a minimum is necessary. Cost is $15 per person. Call 330-337-6733 to reserve a spot.
