Black History Month activity set

FREEDOM QUILTS: In preparation for Black History Month in February, the public can visit the educational and informational Freedom Quilt Station at the Youngstown Mahonoing County Main Library during library hours. People can learn how these historic quilts may have played a significant part in the Underground Railroad; share the book “Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt” and color an individual piece to add to the freedom quilt that will be on display through February. The attraction is open to children of all ages.

FOOD GIVEAWAY: Alpha Omega First Baptist Church, 3120 Winton Ave, Youngstown, will hold a free food giveaway from 11 am. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Those needing food and clothing are welcome to attend. The giveaway is held the fourth Tuesday of each month. Call 330-743-4593 or 330-743-5986.

PENGUIN BOWL: The 17th annual Penguin Bowl is a regional competition of the National Ocean Science Bowls with students competing on topics related to the study of the oceans. Up to four schools competing for the first time are eligible for a free waiver. The program is for students in grades 9-12 with the competition set for Saturday at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. SNOWFLAKE BALL: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Epsilon Mu Omega Chapter will host the annual Black and White Snowflake Ball from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Metroplex, 1620 Motor Inn Drive, Liberty. The chapter will celebrate a tribute to Harlem Renaissance. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the era. A basket raffle will be held. Deejay is Darren Perdue. The annual ball raises funds for scholarships and community outreach and service projects supported by the sorority. Over the years, Epsilon Mu Omega has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving high school seniors in Younstown and surrounding areas of Mahoning, Trumbull, and Mercer counties. The cost is $45 for adults and $25 for students. For tickets, call Kareem at 724-813-8588 or any sorority member. No tickets will be sold at the door.
