Seeing Eye: Newspaper publisher to address Youngstown Kiwanis

PUBLISHER TO VISIT KIWANIS: The Kiwanis Club of Youngstown will present a program at noon Friday in the Manchester Room of the Downtown YMCA. Charles Jarvis, publisher of The Vindicator and the Tribune Chronicle, will present a program on how the Ogden Group purchased and continues to publish The Vindicator. Jarvis has served as a regional publisher since 2000 and currently oversees 14 newspapers. Ogden Newspapers is headquartered in West Virginia but owns 40 papers across the country stretching from New York to Hawaii. NEWCOMERS MEET: Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will be having its luncheon meeting 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Coaches, located on U.S. Route 224 in Poland. Jennifer Kollar from Mahoning County Children Services will be speaking at the meeting.

In celebration of Thanksgiving, members are bringing nonperishable items and small toiletries to donate to the Community Kitchen to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Newcomers is a social group formed more than 30 years ago to help people new to the who have had a change in their life and would like to make new friends and learn about the community.

FIREFIGHTERS DONATE: Boardman Firefighters Local IAFF 1176 presented two checks totaling more than $7,000 to the Wittman family in Canfield and to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Members of IAFF 1176 spent the month of September collecting for its annual “Fill the Boot Campaign” that raises funds for those affected by neuromuscular diseases. This year’s collection will help MDA’s commitment to their families, research and summer camp. Part of the money collected this year will stay local. Matt and Garrett Wittman were both diagnosed with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy at a young age and have been involved with the MDA in Ohio for many years. They are both graduates of Canfield High School.

MUSICAL AT SCHOOL: “Seussical the Musical” based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved characters from the Cat in the Hat, will be performed

7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Canfield High School auditorium. Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for students.
