Award to aid non-native speakers

YOUNGSTOWN — The English Center of Youngs-town, a nonprofit, charitable community organization that provides free English classes to non-native speakers, received a $20,000 grant from the Youngs-town Foundation to assist with operational costs.

The English Center, 1119 Elm St., has its roots in the International Institute of Youngstown, which was established in 1918 to help foreign-born adults adjust to life in the United States.

It currently has more than 90 students from 25 countries attending. Six levels of classes are offered, ranging from the foundations level to the highest level which prepares students for English proficiency tests. Classes are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through May.
