Farmers, Middlefield banks announce merger

Staff report Canfield-based Farmers National Banc Corp. announced Wednesday its seventh acquisition in the past 10 years. The holding company of Farmers National Bank of Canfield and Middlefield Banc Corp. agreed to a merger, the companies noted in a news release. Headquartered in Middlefield, the corporation is the holding company for The Middlefield Banking Company. The boards of directors of both companies unanimously approved the agreement. Initial unemployment claims in state drop from week prior

Staff report The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Thursday that Ohioans filed 4,527 initial unemployment claims last week. That represents a drop of 666 claims from the previous week. Ohioans filed 40,701 continued unemployment claims last week, which was 258 fewer than the previous week. The total number of claims filed from Oct. 12 to Oct. 18 was 45,228. Ohio’s unemployment rate in August was 5%. The national unemployment rate in August was 4.3%. US hits $38 trillion in debt

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the midst of a federal government shutdown, the U.S. government’s gross national debt surpassed $38 trillion Wednesday, a record number that highlights the accelerating accumulation of debt on America’s balance sheet. It’s also the fastest accumulation of a trillion dollars in debt outside of the COVID-19 pandemic — the U.S. hit $37 trillion in gross national debt in August this year. USDA is reopening some offices to help farmers access $3B in aid

The Associated Press The Agriculture Department will reopen about 2,100 county offices all across the country today despite the ongoing government shutdown to help farmers and ranchers get access to $3 billion of aid from existing programs. The USDA said each Farm Service Agency office will have two workers who will be paid even though the government remains shutdown. These offices help farmers apply for farm loans, crop insurance, disaster aid and other programs.
