Initial unemployment claims rise slightly

Staff report Ohioans filed 6,117 initial unemployment claims for the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported this week. That number was 654 more than the previous week. Ohioans filed 40,651 continued unemployment claims last week, an increase of 259 from the previous week. Ohio’s unemployment rate in August was 5%. The national unemployment rate in August was 4.3%. Ohio’s labor force participation rate in August was 62.5%. The national labor force participation rate in August was 62.3%.

Staff report A discounted movie theater in Boardman will end operations Jan. 1. Paige DeCiancio, co-owner of Movies 8, made the announcement Wednesday on social media. “It’s not easy to walk away from this place, and it’s the last thing that we wanted,” she said. “But sometimes good things come to an end.” Movies 8 features previously run movies at $4 per person and recently added Disney movie classics. NEW YORK (AP) — A top executive at a startup company that eased the process for college students applying for financial aid was sentenced Wednesday to over five years in prison for cheating JPMorgan Chase in a $175 million acquisition of the company four years ago.
