Area unemployment falls in September

Staff report Unemployment dipped in the Mahoning Valley from the August to September reporting periods, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported. Mahoning County saw a 4.7% unemployment rate in September compared to 5.7% the prior month. The state said 4,900 of Mahoning’s 104,200 workforce did not hold jobs in September. Going from 7.5% to 6%, Youngstown witnessed its unemployment figure fall 1.5 percentage points during the same period. Of the city’s 22,100 workers, 1,300 were unemployed in September. Staff report A home improvement retailer will amend its rebate advertising practices following a multistate agreement, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Thursday. An investigation by Ohio and nine other states resulted in a $4.25 million settlement with Menards, a Wisconsin-based home-improvement retailer, over allegations of deceptive rebate advertising. Retail sales unchanged in October, hurt in part by a decline in auto sales

NEW YORK (AP) — Sales at U.S. retailers and restaurants were unchanged in October from September as consumers moderated their spending amid worries about higher prices and other economic uncertainties after splurging over the summer. But a big factor dragging down the figure was a 1.6% drop in sales at motor vehicles and auto parts dealerships, hurt by the expiration of federal government subsidies that sliced demand for battery-powered electric cars.
