Boxy Jeep Grand Wagoneer has it all

By Len Ingrassia 4 min read

To make its Jeep Grand Wagoneer more competitive in the premium luxury SUV segment, the company dropped 2026 prices by up to $18,000. It's part of a mid-year refresh that, among other things, deleted all chrome moldings throughout its nearly 19-foot length.

It seats up to eight in three rows depending on seat configuration and has a massive cargo hold with all three rows in their upright and power reclining position. Aimed squarely at the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator ultra luxury segment, the Jeep is a worthy competitor although it lacks longevity.

Available in six distinct trim levels, all are powered by a Hurricane I-6 engine developing 420 horsepower. A range extended electric vehicle producing more than 600 ponies has more juice and is reviewed separately. With all its heft, we timed the 60-mile-per hour sprint at an impressive 5.6 seconds.

The Grand Wagoneer is available in six trim levels priced from $64,000 to 107,000 - Base, Limited Altitude, Upland, Limited Reserve, Summit Obsidian and Summit Reserve.

Our extended length L Summit Obsidian tester appears wider, longer and taller than previous models and may not appeal to everyone due to its Chevy Suburban like size. Curb weight is 6,450 pounds with gross vehicle weight of 7,700 pounds.

On the flip side, you can transport several couples and their luggage in grand fashion with rear entertainment screens, passenger interactive display, heated and ventilated seats, 24-way massaging front seats and a rear cabin facing camera to keep tabs on everyone.

Audiophiles will be impressed with McIntosh Entertainment systems available with 19 or 23 speakers. Our tester was also equipped with rear seat Amazon Fire TV built in with 10.1-inch screens mounted on front seat backs.

While parking this large vehicle can be challenging, numerous camera views help keep the super-sized SUV on its intended path.

What impressed us most was the ride and handling of this big 'ute. Its independent suspension and adaptive setup maintain body roll to a minimum. Double pane glass, triple-sealed is standard keeping outside wind and highway speed travel noises hushed.

The air suspension can also adjust the ride height up to four inches making entry and exit effortless. Opening doors also activates power steps to further ease the

process.

An earlier version of the Wagoneer debuted in 1984 through 1991 before taking a hiatus, reappearing in 2022 in its present format. The standard Wagoneer nameplate has since been merged into the Grand Wagoneer.

Storage is enormous with nearly 43 cubic feet behind the third row and 131 cubes with second and third row seats power folded. Taller folks best watch their 'noggin' with the lower rear liftgate opening.

Underfloor storage is also available for out of sight items and there are additional door storage compartments and a large center console bin.

Fuel economy is 18 miles per gallon with normal driving. The Grand Wagoneer rides on 22-inch painted aluminum wheels with 285/45R all season paws.

A terrain system is also built in should you want to take the big Jeep off-road.
