Mazda’s new SUV CX 90 goes upscale
You can have it your way with the new Mazda CX-90, a mid-size SUV that seats seven or eight depending on configuration. Its luxurious appointments will rival German and domestic counterparts while delivering a punch with several engine choices –turbo, hybrid and plug-in variants — to suit your needs and wallet.
Trim levels run the gamut from its base Select model in the $40s to a Premium Plus Turbo hovering around $60,000.
The four-year-old CX-90 replaced the CX-9 in 2023, a crossover with limited appeal in the luxury segment, featuring a larger cabin and technology advances.
Weighing in at 2.5-ton, the larger model handles the road with a firmness not found in this segment, although some may find the ride too athletic. It will tow its own weight — a plus for families on the go.
Mazda designed the new model to offer high-end amenities found in Lexus TX, Mercedes and BMW models at a substantially lower price point.
Our top-of-the-line 3.3 turbo premium plus tester was draped in Nappa leather upholstery, Maple wood trim, stitch upholstered dashboard-insert and a 12 speaker Bose sound system.
All CX-90 models are all-wheel drive and mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions. In-line 3.3-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engines come in 280 horsepower or the 340 high output in our tester.
At our independent track, the CX-90 recorded a remarkable 6.4 second time in the dead stop to 60 mile-per-hour test.
All CX-90s ride on 21-inch alloys with all-season paws for improved handling in all kinds of climates providing improved grip.
While quick off the line, we noticed mild turbo lag and rough changing gears at times under acceleration that produced a whine. Under normal driving conditions, the CX-90 delivers a smooth ride with passing power when needed.
Its four-wheel independent suspension absorbs most road imperfections along the way delivering a quiet, firmly planted ride in straight-aways and cornering maneuvers.
Twin 12.3-inch screens display instrumentation and entertainment with the latter controlled by a dated center console rotary knob. Manual address inputs are clumsy although a voice activated option streamlines this process.
Interior space is roomy for front and second row occupants but we found the third row is best suited for small children or for added cargo space. With this configuration, there is 40 cubic feet, trailing European rivals.
Blind spots are minimized with a 360-degree view monitor on the top trim. The camera-based system provides a top-down perspective allowing vision of obstacles in blind zones while maneuvering in tight spaces. Driver assist features include adaptive cruise control keeping your vehicle a set distance from traffic ahead while braking or accelerating to maintain the set speed.
Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitors, lane keeping assist and emergency braking enhance the driving experience by giving the driver peace of mind in many road conditions.
Cross shop the CX-90 with Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Grand Highlander, Honda Pilot as well as premium models including the Acura MDX, Lincoln Aviator, Cadillac XT6 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
