Hands-on heroes get their day
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN — City Machine Technologies Inc. founded National Skilled Trades Day to raise awareness of the advantages of skilled trades careers in the United States and to honor skilled trades workers.
National Skilled Trades Day is observed annually on the first Wednesday in May, as proclaimed by the Registrar at National Day Calendar. This year, it will be celebrated May 6.
“Those who work with their hands should be celebrated,” said Claudia Kovach of City Machine Technologies Inc. “These people repair your cars, fix your appliances, check your temperature and administer medicine. They are true American heroes. These are the jobs that can’t be sent overseas. Artificial intelligence can’t do these jobs.”
According to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Job Outlook Report, more than 61% of all jobs in 2022 required no more than a high school diploma. Nearly 39% called for some form of post-secondary education, ranging from a certificate to an advanced degree.
CMT launched National Skilled Trades Day in 2019 to honor skilled trades workers, educate communities about the value of those careers and encourage people to explore trade schools and vocational paths.
Also, for National Skilled Trades Day, CMT has a coloring contest for children ages 3 to 11. Winners will receive a Walmart gift card.

CMT encourages everyone to help raise awareness about the benefits of skilled trades jobs on social media this year using the hashtag #NationalSkilledTradesDay.
