Jobless numbers jump in January
Mahoning and Trumbull counties witnessed the loss of 3,400 jobs from December to January, according to statistics from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
They have the highest unemployment in the state with Trumbull ranked ninth among Ohio’s 88 counties. Mahoning is 13th. Neighboring Columbiana County is 32nd (5.5%); Stark County, 43rd (5%) Portage County, 46th (4.9%); Ashtabula County, 58th (4.4%); and Geauga County, 85th (3.4%).
Mahoning’s unemployment rate jumped from 4.8% to 6.5% as the number of jobless went from 5,000 to 6,700 during the period. Trumbull’s jobless went from 4,500 to 6,200 for a 7% rate.
Youngstown’s jobless rate jumped from 6% in December to 8.5% in January. Meanwhile, the city of Warren had 1,300 out of work for 9.4% in January compared to 800 unemployed (8.5%) in December.
Ohio’s unemployment rate in January was 4.3%. The national unemployment rate in January was 4.3%. Ohio’s labor force participation rate in January was 62.2%. The national labor force participation rate in January was 62.1%.
For the week of March 29 to April 4, Ohioans filed 5,372 initial unemployment claims, which was 514 more than the previous week. Ohioans filed 52,335 continued unemployment claims last week, which was 3,510 fewer than the previous week.
The total number of claims filed from March 29, 2026-April 4, 2026, was 57,707.
