Kimberly-Clark considering building new distribution center

WARREN — Although the company has not completed construction of its first building, Kimberly-Clark Corp. representatives are laying the groundwork needed for a new enterprise zone agreement to place a warehouse on its property.

“They are looking to receive a 60% tax abatement for 10 years,” Trumbull County Planning Assistant Director Nicholas Coggins told commissioners during Tuesday’s workshop meeting.

The company is considering building a 591,000-square-foot building for a distribution center.

“They are looking at a regional distribution center,” Coggins said. “This is a potential project. They are trying to get their incentives and any other financial packages in order so they can take it to their board.”

Howland trustees approved the enterprise zone proposal last week. The commissioners will have a public hearing on the proposal prior to Wednesday’s public meeting.

“This will employ an additional 65 people,” Commissioner Rick Hernandez said. “We did give a 60% abatement for its initial project. I don’t see any issues.”

Coggins said Kimberly-Clark has potential for expansion anywhere in the country.

“We are trying to make sure that this has the potential to be built up four to five years down the road,” he said.

Malloy said this could be the first of three to four phases of building on its property at the former RG Steel site on Pine Avenue, which straddles Howland and Warren townships. The warehouse site is solely in Howland.

Coggins said the proposed distribution center is in its early stages and may not even materialize.

“We will probably be seeing additional asks from Kimberly-Clark, which will be a major economic driver of employment opportunity,” Hernandez said. “They have a lot of land there.”

Malloy added there have been talks of phase III and phase IV of the project.

“Let them grow,” he added.

Starting at $3.23/week.
