Gordo’s to open second locale in Warren
WARREN — Victor Alcazar jokes that naming his newest Mexican dining venture — Gordo’s Authentic Street Tacos — wasn’t difficult.
“Me and my business partners — we’re not that skinny,” the Austintown resident said, laughing afterward. “We should put something like ‘Gordo’s.'”
The polite translation for “gordo” is “overweight.” Like a growing waistline, Alcazar and his partners are expanding the Gordo brand to its second location, 161 S. Main St., Warren. The site was home to the shuttered Burger King in the city’s downtown.
The projected opening will take place between November and December, Alcazar said. The hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday with extended hours on the weekend. The location is expected to employ seven to 10 workers.
“It’s not a Mexican restaurant, like, with a full sit-down menu and staff,” he said. “So people come in. … They start their order from picking tacos, burritos or whatever they want.
“It’s fast food, but it’s fresh and you see how they prep it. We don’t have anything frozen. We prep every day.”
The menu, found online at gordo sauthenticstreettacos.com, features street tacos, burrito bowls, quesadillas, burritos and nachos.
“One of our best sellers is like a burrito bowl, and that burrito bowl is big,” Alcazar said. “It comes in a 32-ounce bowl.”
The business looks to obtain a liquor license but isn’t sure that will happen before its opening.
“We like the concept (of Gordo’s), because it’s quick,” Alcazar said. “People need time these days. You don’t have to sit down and wait for your food for 30 minutes to come out. You just have it in five.”
Alcazar and his partners have performed extensive renovations inside the former Burger King. Flat-screen televisions line the walls with newly designed booths and seating areas featured.
Electric. Plumbing. Flooring. Heating. Coolers. Freezers. All new.
Alcazar declined to reveal the cost of the work.
The original Gordo’s, the site of a former Taco Bell, opened in September 2024 in New Castle, Pa.
In addition to the two Gordo’s facilities, Alcazar and his partners own El Jalapeno, 5125 Youngstown Warren Road, Niles, and two Sr. Jalapenos, one at 4055 Belmont Ave., Liberty, and the other at 702 Youngstown-Poland Road, Struthers.
A group affiliated with Burger King purchased the property for $1.9 million on Nov. 25, 2013, according to the Trumbull County Auditor’s website. The Downtown Development Group, headed by Mark Marvin, obtained the site for $200,000 on Nov. 13, 2024.
