BRITE gets $25K grant to improve Grohl alley

WARREN — BRITE Energy Innovators, Ohio’s only energy technology startup incubator, has been awarded $25,000 from Main Street America and General Motors to support the Dave Grohl Alley Improvement Project.

The GM on Main Street Grant was among six announced Friday for nonprofits and municipal governments.

BRITE plans to implement the project over the summer and fall by building on recent investments from the Ohio Arts Council and local partners. This new funding will allow for greater connectivity between clean energy concepts and public art through the lens of rock and roll, according to BRITE.

The organization plans to install a moveable kinetic dance floor that will generate renewable energy to power technology demonstrations in David Grohl Alley and BRITE’s offices.

It also could include three kinetic sculptures inspired by Foo Fighters or Nirvana music. The alley’s namesake Dave Grohl, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee as the drummer for Nirvana and as leader of the rock band Foo Fighters, is a native of Warren.

Interpretive signage also could be installed to explain the technologies used, provide context to the installations and connect visitors to more information and training.

“We’re truly excited to continue to improve one of the top tourist destinations in our region and build upon the partnership between stakeholders of the Alley and the city of Warren,” Sara Daugherty, BRITE chief of staff said.-

GM and Main Street America created the program in 2022 to fund innovative placemaking initiatives in local commercial districts near GM facilities. Grantees were selected based on the project’s placemaking-focus, innovation and creativity, inclusivity, feasibility and replicability.
