Project will add 34,700 square feet

BOARDMAN — Akron Children’s Hospital is investing $31 million to expand the emergency room at its Beeghly Campus.

The project will increase the number of treatment rooms from 17 to 23 and add 34,700 square feet to the existing 9,600-square-foot emergency room.

In addition, the number of behavioral health treatment rooms will increase by two to three, and the number of triage rooms will grow from one to two, according to the hospital.

A groundbreaking is set for Oct. 13 at the facility, 6505 Market St., Boardman.

In recognition of a $1 million gift for the project from Leonard J. Fisher, chairman of the board of Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, Building A on the hospital’s campus has been named the Leonard J. Fisher Family Building.

Scheduled to speak are Grace Wakulchik, president and CEO, Akron Children’s Hospital; Paul Olivier, vice president, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Enterprises; Dr. Mary Costello, emergency department site director, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley; and Joni Ehrhart of New Middletown, whose three children receive care from Akron Children’s.
