WARREN — The jobless rates in Trumbull and Mahoning counties edged down again last month, yet remain among the highest among counties in Ohio, according to the latest unemployment numbers from the state.

Data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services shows Trumbull County’s jobless rate in August was 6.6 percent and Mahoning County was 6.5 percent — decreases of 0.9 percent each when compared to July.

Those rates, however, place the two counties among the nine in Ohio with rates of at least 6.5 percent, according to the data that was released Tuesday. Still, the numbers are well below August 2020, when the viral outbreak was causing widespread job loss. Then, Trumbull County was at 11.4 percent and Mahoning County, 11.5 percent.

Last month in Warren, the rate fell 1.5 percent from July to 8.3 percent. Youngstown was down, too, from 10.4 percent to 9.1 percent in August. Last year, Warren was 15.3 percent and Youngstown, 16.4 percent.

Across the state, Jefferson County south of Columbiana County had the highest jobless rate in the state, 7.1 percent. The lowest rate among Ohio’s 88 counties was 3.2 percent in Holmes County in central Ohio. The state had a rate of 5.4 percent in August. In the U.S., the rate was 5.2 percent.
