Auto sales slump in Valley

WARREN — Vehicle sales in the Mahoning Valley slumped a bit last month, falling 13.6 percent from August a year ago, according to the latest numbers from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association.

For the year, however, dealers are well above the pace set in 2020, a year that saw the industry suffer from the viral outbreak.

The association reports August had 4,754 deliveries of new and used vehicles, down 750 from the previous year. Through August though, sales are up 13.4 percent with 41,257 deliveries.

The new and used vehicle segments had mixed results for the month.

New vehicle sales fell 25 percent to 2,212 units from 2,948 but remained strong for year so far, being up 15.2 percent. Through August, dealers sold 21,767 new vehicles, up from 18,892 over the same period last year.

Used vehicle sales were mostly stagnant, up a modest 0.7 percent for August with 2,478 vehicles sold. For the year, sales were up 11.8 percent to 18,628.

Dealerships in Mahoning County with the most sales to buyers in the Mahoning Valley were Boardman Subaru, the overall top-seller, 250; Taylor Kia of Boardman, 249; and Greenwood Chevrolet, 201.

The top new vehicle sellers were Taylor Kia of Boardman, 151; Boardman Subaru, 125; and Sweeney Buick GMC, 115;

The top used vehicle sellers were Fred Martin Ford, 129; Boardman Subaru, 125; and Greenwood Chevrolet, 119.

Across the dealers’ association 21-county reach in northern Ohio, new vehicle sales were down 15.8 percent, from 21,810 in August 2020 to 18,357 last month.

“Limited inventory continues to be a driving force in the new vehicle sales results, and August is an example of the impact, since it’s usually the second highest selling month of the year, behind March,” Louis A. Vitantonio, dealers’ association president, said.

“In September and through last quarter of 2021, vehicles will continue to arrive at franchised dealerships; however with sustained demand, the inventory will be tight. Used vehicles will remain a focus point for many motor vehicle dealers in order to fulfill their customers’ needs,” he said.
