Postal workers credit union acquired
WARREN — A small credit union of U.S. Postal Service employees in Trumbull County has been acquired by Hilliard-based Credit Union of Ohio.
The 150 members of Trumbull County Postal Employees Credit Union, founded in 1932, will join Credit Union of Ohio’s banking network Wednesday.
The postal employees credit union, which operated from an office at the downtown Warren post office, has assets of about $980,000. The acquisition received regulatory approval in July, according to a spokeswoman with Credit Union of Ohio.
The merger gives postal employee credit union members access to expanded and previously unavailable services, including checking accounts, debit cards, mobile and online banking and a branch location on Warren Avenue in Niles.
In addition, the new members will have access to Credit Union of Ohio’s credit cards, home-equity products and free financial coaching.
New members will be imported into Credit Union of Ohio’s system Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. While this is happening, members will have limited access for debit card and credit card purchases and withdrawals, online and phone banking, and the mobile app.
In 2020, Credit Union of Ohio acquired First Choice Community Credit Union in Niles, which at the time had about 5,000 members. The merger was Credit Union of Ohio’s entry in the Mahoning Valley and its fifth branch location. The other branches are near or in Columbus.
Credit Union of Ohio has $193 million in assets and about 21,000 members. It formed in 1967 as the State Employees Credit Union to serve employees of Ohio. It changed to Credit Union of Ohio in 2003 to reflect a more diverse membership, according to its website.
