WARREN — Trumbull and Mahoning counties saw a rise in their jobless rates last month from May, yet June’s numbers are far better than last year at the height of the pandemic.

It’s the same trend in Warren and in Youngstown — the Mahoning Valley’s two most populous cities, according to the latest unemployment numbers from the state.

Data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services show Trumbull County’s jobless rate at 7.7 percent and Mahoning County’s at 7.5 percent — increases of 1.6 percent and 1.3 percent when compared with May.

One year ago in June, when businesses were reducing their workforces or even closing, Trumbull County had an unemployment rate of 12.6 percent and Mahoning County, 12.5 percent.

In Warren, the rate increased by 1.8 percent from May to settle at 9.9 percent for June. In Youngstown, June’s rate was 10.2 percent, up from 8.6 percent in May. One year ago in June, Warren posted a rate of 15.7 percent and Youngstown, 16.1 percent.

Across the state, Erie County posted the highest unemployment rate, 8.7 percent. The lowest rate among Ohio’s 88 counties was 3.8 percent in Holmes County in the central part of the state. Ohio recorded a rate of 6.3 percent in June. In the U.S., the rate was 6.1 percent.
