State exceeds previous high mark for business filings

Ohio set a new record with 22,176 new business filings in April, one month after the previous all-time high was surpassed.

Last month was the first time the number pushed past 20,000, according to Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s office. April’s number represents a 94 percent increase from April 2020, when 11,447 new filings were recorded.

The previous record was 19,694 in March. Before that, the mark was 18,659 (July 2020).

New business filings are forms filed with the secretary of state that declare the formation of a for-profit, nonprofit, professional corporation, limited liability company, partnership, limited partnership and limited liability partnership. Filing does not guarantee the company will begin operations.
