YOUNGSTOWN — Two Mahoning Valley natives, sister and brother, Denise York and Edward J. DeBartolo Jr., have again made Forbes’ annual billionaires list.

York, co-chairwoman of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers, and family rank No. 859 with a net worth of $3.5 billion. The family is among 32 people on the list at that rank.

DeBartolo Jr., former 49ers owner who owns a Florida-based property development and investment firm, is No. 1,362 with 81 other people who have a net worth of $2.3 billion.

York’s family owns more than 90 percent of the 49ers, the NFL’s fifth-most valuable team, worth $3.5 billion, according to Forbes. Her father, Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. — property and shopping mall developer — bought the team in 1977 for $13 million. She took controlling interest in the team in 2001.

Her oldest child of four, Jed, is CEO of the team and her husband, John, is a pathologist who founded DeYor Laboratories in Youngstown before selling it to Corning, according to Forbes.

DeBartolo Jr., who founded and oversees DeBartolo Holdings, is an NFL Hall of Fame executive and former owner of the 49ers during the 1980s and 1990s, when the team won five Super Bowls.

In 1998, DeBartolo pleaded guilty to not reporting a bribe from a Louisiana government official, according to Forbes. President Donald Trump pardoned DeBartolo in 2020. He also owns shares in Simon Property Group, which was created when Simon merged with the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation.

Topping Forbes’ list is Jeff Bezos, who founded global online retailer Amazon, with a net worth of $177 billion. Rounding out the top five are Elon Musk of electric vehicle-maker Tesla and space rocket producer, SpaceX; fashion mogul Bernard Arnault and family, who oversees 70 brands, including Louis Vuitton and Sephora; Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft; and Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook.
