Ryan sponsors bill to create manufacturing officer
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan is a lead sponsor of a bill to create an office of manufacturing and industrial innovation policy, overseen by a chief manufacturing officer in the executive branch.
The office would focus on America’s manufacturing industry and workforce, and work to improve global competitiveness following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The legislation would also develop a long-term plan to ensure the growth and national security of the U.S. manufacturing industry and coordinate efforts to support manufacturing, Ryan, D-Howland, said.
The importance of manufacturing “cannot be overstated,” he said. “Manufacturing plays a critical role in almost every part of our economy, stretching from construction to pharmaceuticals, transportation to agriculture.”
Almost 5 million manufacturing jobs have been lost since 2000, Ryan said, mostly because of automation, trade deals and off-shoring.
