Wagering falls again at Austintown racino

AUSTINTOWN — Betting on video lottery terminals last month at Mahoning Valley Race Course eclipsed $114.3 million, but October marked the second straight month the racino reported wagering was down.

In contrast, wagering at Ohio’s seven racinos rallied some to overcome a down September, according to the latest numbers from the Ohio Lottery Commission, which oversees video lottery terminals, or VLTs, in Ohio.

Wagering at the Austintown facility was about $1.4 million less than the $115.7 million bettors wagered in September, representing a modest 1.2 percent decline.

Betting there last month, however, was greater than in October 2019, by 2.6 percent. Then, wagers were $111.3 million, according to the commission.

The racino in October posted a net win of $10.6 million, down from $11 million in September, and percent payout of 90.6 compared to 90.4 percent the prior month. There was an average of 1,123 VLTs on the game floor, the same as in September, and the win / VLT per day was $307, down $21 from September.

Bettors won $101.8 million in credits, down from $102.9 million in September.

In comparison, bettors won $98.8 million in credits and the racino reported a net win of $10.8 million in October 2019. The percent payout was 90.2, the average number of VLTs was 1,102 and the win / VLT per day was $318.

Of the net winnings last month, $7 million went to racino operator, Wyomissing, Pa.-based Penn National Gaming Inc., $3.5 million to the lottery commission and $35,494 to support programs that provide support for gambling addition and related services.

The commission reported across the state last month that bettors wagered $1.02 billion, the third month in row wagering surpassed $1 billion. In September, wagering surpassed $1 billion by about $4 million.

Players won $914.5 million compared to $987.3 million in September, and racinos reported a net win of $94.3 million, up from $92.7 million. The percent payout was 90.8 with a win / VLT per day of $278, down $1 from the prior month. An average of 10,942 VLTs were in play, down from 11,095 in September.

In October 2019, wagers topped $1 billion by about $7 million. There were $899.1 million credits won with a net win of $90.3 million. There was a 91 percent payout with an average of 11,574 machines on the gaming floors. The win / VLT per day was $252.

Last month, $62.4 million was given to operators, $31.5 million to the lottery commission and $313,571 to problem gambling services.
