Chemical plant in Ravenna to close

RAVENNA — Global chemical and tech firm Johnson Matthey will close its Ravenna plant west of Newton Falls, affecting 55 employees, according to a mass layoff notice filed with the state.

The closure is expected to start in October and wind down in February. Johnson Matthey acquired the North Freedom Street plant in September 2014, and, according to the notice is closing the facility “in response to challenging market conditions and based on long-term strategic objectives.”

A plant official told the Record-Courier in Ravenna that some workers could transfer to a facility in Georgia.
