LOCAL JOURNALIST HONORED: Andrea Wood, publisher of The Business Journal in Youngstown, is the first journalist from the Youngstown area to be inducted into the Press Club of Cleveland’s Journalism Hall of Fame.

Wood came to the Mahoning Valley in 1974 as a reporter and weekend anchor for WYTV Channel 33. She left, but returned in 1979 to WYTV as an investigative reporter. She launched the Youngstown Business Journal in 1984. It became bi-monthly and in 1992, shortened its name to The Business Journal. It went digital in 1996.

The induction ceremony took place last week in Cleveland.

YBI COMPANY PRINTS FAMOUS STATUE REPLICA: Freshmade 3D, a Youngstown Business Incubator Portfolio Company, along with Kent State University, unveiled an 80 percent scale replica of Pio Fedi’s Liberty of Poetry statue, which resides at the Opera di Santa Croce in Florence, Italy. The original is said to have served as the inspiration for the Statue of Liberty. The 9-foot tall replica was created with AMClad, a proprietary 3-D printed material developed by Freshmade 3D. The rays on the top of the head were cast in a 3-D printed sand mold printed by Humtown Products in Leetonia.

The replica statue is featured at an exhibit at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration in New York City. The exhibit, titled “Sisters in Liberty: From Florence, Italy, to New York, New York,” is a collaboration between Kent State University and the Opera di Santa Croce, a nonprofit organization in charge of the Franciscan Cathedral Santa Croce that serves as the resting place of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli.

AMERICA MAKES OFFICIALS RECOGNIZED: America Makes has honored Ralph Resnick, America Makes founding director, and Rob Gorham, former America Makes executive director, with the America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award for their contributions to America Makes and its mission.

America Makes is the nation’s leading and collaborative partner in additive manufacturing technology research, discovery, creation, and innovation. It is the first of eight Manufacturing Innovation Institutes established and managed by the U.S. Department of Defense as public-private partnerships.

Established in 2014, the award recognizes an individual or a group of individuals with exceptional commitment and dedication to the advancement of additive manufacturing technology, practices, and innovation in the manufacturing industry.

ASSOCIATION OFFERS THANKS: The Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association is congratulating former OHHA President Dick Brandt for his service to the harness racing industry as he steps down from the board of directors and as treasurer at the United States Trotting Association.

Brandt was elected to the USTA’s board of directors in 1986 and as treasurer in 2001. He served as president of the horsemen’s association in 1984 and 1985.

The horsemen’s association is a nonprofit organization serving Standardbred horse owners, breeders, trainers, drivers and fans who participate in the sport of harness racing in Ohio.

New Businesses

RIBBON CUT: A ribbon was cut welcoming the Youngstown Event Center, 12 E. Dewey Ave., on Wednesday.

The center has meeting rooms that can accommodate 10 to 200 people for business meetings, luncheons, trade shows, weddings and more. It features its own in-house audio-visual equipment that includes sound throughout the entire building. Tables and plush chairs are provided.

PHYSICIANS JOIN AKRON CHILDREN’S: Anhtuan Huynh, D.O., and Jodi Regan, M.D., recently joined Akron Children’s Hospital’s Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) department.

Before joining Akron Children’s, obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Huynh saw patients at Cleveland Clinic’s Women’s Health Institute at the Main Campus in Cleveland and at Fairview Hospital in Lorain.

Dr. Regan had practiced general obstetrics and gynecology for 12 years before beginning a fellowship at the University of Cincinnati in 2011. She has practiced MFM in the past at the University of Cincinnati and was affiliated with Kettering Medical Center in Dayton through the University of Cincinnati. Most recently she practiced in Tucson, Arizona.

Hospital MFM providers manage complications in pregnancy, including multiple pregnancies, placental abnormalities, fetal anomalies, genetic disorders, nutritional issues and infectious diseases. Preconception services are also available for women with medical or family histories that put them at risk for pregnancy complications or for couples concerned about genetic conditions and disorders.
