LIBERTY – A Youngstown man is facing charges after being accused of damaging vehicles in a local plaza area early Wednesday.

Rodney Sanders, 37, pleaded not guilty to a charge of criminal damaging and appeared on a felony vandalism charge in front of Girard Municipal Court Judge Jeffery Adler Wednesday morning.

According to a police report, officers were called to the Belmont Avenue McDonalds for a man throwing rocks at vehicles and windows, with dispatchers adding that he was dressed in all black and walking near a Rent-A-Center.

Officers noted a vehicle with its driver’s side window shattered behind the restaurant, and another officer reported finding a man matching the reported description in front of an oil change garage further up the street. He was crying and confirmed to the officer that he had just smashed a window, the police report states.

The officer spoke with two McDonalds employees, who saw the man walking up to their window and hanging around another business’s unoccupied vehicles, peering through their windows and throwing rocks at the vehicles a short time later, shattering one of their windows.

The report states the man then started throwing rocks at the McDonalds, striking the building’s windows, too.

The officer noted one of the vehicles had its window broken and several others sustained fresh damages consistent with being struck by a rock, and the employees said they would be able to identify the man if they saw him again, as he always comes into into the business to get water. They later confirmed the person was Sanders.

The report states Sanders later admitted to causing the damage.

Sanders is set to appear back in court Nov. 12 and remained in the Trumbull County jail as of Wednesday night.
