BERLIN CENTER – Students at Western Reserve High School are exploring science careers as the district expands its biomedical program with new lab equipment.

Students recently had access to professional lab equipment thanks to the district's partnership with Project Lead the Way. The nonprofit’s partnerships with industry leaders, universities and other nonprofits “ensures its curriculum stays at the cutting edge and mirrors modern workforce realities of today, while also building the lifelong skills needed for tomorrow,” its website states.

Western Reserve has developed curriculum with the national nonprofit organization to offer hands-on, project-based STEM, and career and technical education.

Biomed students recently debuted professional-grade microscopes, which provided a practical experience for a lab examination of human body systems. The class is instructed by Dennis Zinz as part of a course series in which students can earn special credentials for graduation.

"Supporting the interests and growing career pathways for our students gives them the best opportunity to be competitive in the workforce or jumpstart their college career if that's what they want to pursue," Western Reserve Superintendent Dallas Saunders said.

The district offers a variety of STEM and career exploration classes for students as early as elementary school.
