STRUTHERS – Struthers Middle School students launched “the season of giving” early this year with a school-wide food drive to assist more than 100 families this holiday season.
Students teamed up with the local nonprofit, The Boo Squad, to donate items for Thanksgiving meals for families across the Mahoning Valley.
The Boo Squad was founded in 2017 and is a volunteer organization that teaches children ages 7 to 13 the importance of teamwork, volunteerism and compassion through giving back to their community. Struthers Middle School contributed to the organization’s annual Thanksgiving food drive to provide a complete holiday meal, including a turkey and groceries, for hundreds of families.
Students gathered and organized over a dozen food types, including corn, pie filling, stuffing, green beans, yams and more. The top donated item was corn – students collected more than 200 cans of it alone.
Amber Bonilla, Struthers Middle School teacher and drive organizer, said, “The Boo Squad is an amazing volunteer organization. Their generosity continues to make a tremendous difference right here in our community.”
