Canfield council updated on mastodon bones

By J.T. WHITEHOUSE 3 min read

CANFIELD – A search continues for the body of a mastodon in the city, City Manager David D'Apolito announced at this week’s city council meeting.

"The Mahoning Valley Archeological Society contacted me about doing a soil study in Fair Park," D'Apolito said. "They are trying to locate the rest of the mastodon that was on display at the Canfield Historical Society."

He said a team was sent in to take soil samples around the area of the park where the mastodon skull was reported to have been found. The skull was put on display last spring at the Canfield Historical Society's Bond House.

Information the society obtained showed the skull was dug up near a bog next to Smith's Pond. On Wednesday, a team took soil samples with a hand auger, according to D'Apolito.

"There was no heavy equipment used in our park," he said.

Results of the dig are not yet known.

In other business, D'Apolito praised John Rapp and the Public Works crews for handling a big water main break directly under the turning lane at the north end of the Village Green earlier this week.

"John was there 18 hours straight," D'Apolito said. "His crew put in 12 hours in a Herculean effort to fix the break."

Because of the location, the city had to shut down North Broad Street at the end of the Village Green. Police put up road closed signs and helped keep traffic away from the location while the city crew completed the repairs.

Rapp mentioned the road again was to be closed 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday. He said the city got a deal on blacktop and decided to finish the road.

Rapp also mentioned the Morton Salt contract. He said a leak in one of the mines forced it to be shut down for repairs. The salt mine is under Lake Erie and won't be reopened until the repairs are made.

"It could take six months to fix," Rapp said.

In the meantime, Rapp said a salt order was placed to see how it would be handled.

"We have 800 tons in reserve right now," he said. "If we have a mild winter, it should last until January."
